❗ Don't miss Daniel Wexler's workshop during the The Alliance for a Hunger Free New York's 4th annual Food Summit! 💡 Dan will be hosting an interactive session on Food As Medicine Interventions and #socialdeterminantsofhealth. The session goal is to illustrate how--in addition to income--other social determinants of health pose a barrier to food security; consider the diversity of #FoodisMedicine (FIM) treatment options; and understand the different types of benefits each solution offers, and what interventions might work best for different patients.

Non sibi, sed suis While resources are provided for food on-campus, there are still segments of students that experience difficulties with accessing food. As a result, a trio of students formed Students Against Food Insecurity (SAFI), which has partnered with various organizations and departments to distribute over 3,500 pounds of food to the Tulane community. In Haiti, the World Food Programme has been boosting its support to family farmers. In a post I shared yesterday, I showed how our purchases of local food from family farmers have tripled in a year, going from USD 2.8m to USD 8.4m. The following animation gives an idea of the program's footprint. 1-It shows that he tasty local foods served in the school meals program produced by over 4,000 farmers - quite a jump from 300 in 2019. 2-This trend shows that decentralized, local purchases are viable and scalable, even in challenging contexts like Haiti.

Creating a local distribution network for fresh produce in small markets! It's been interesting to find the flash points between what's seasonal, culturally in demand, and affordable in our regional foodshed. Now in six stores, the next phase of the program involves ramping up quantity, and hosting community pop-ups with local chefs, growers, and educators. Ultimately, a piece of the puzzle in ending food apartheid.
