We were fortunate to hear from Severn Trent on their impressive work linking ethnicity data to industry standards and overlaying it with geographical diversity. 🌍📊 🤝 **Key Insights:** 1. **Allyship Matters:** Having executive sponsors is essential for the success of any EDI group. Their support can make a significant impact.  2. **Earned Leadership:** EDI Group Chair positions are earned based on merit and commitment, not just volunteered for. 👑 The British Monarchy, a Dysfunctional Company in Disguise As we rubberneck the dynamics within the British monarchy, it's easy to draw parallels with dysfunctional corporate structures. Not surprised about how the organization that calls itself “The Firm” mirrors the traits of companies with terrible cultures: 1. Cult of Personality Leadership: Much like in some corporations where leadership is centered around one individual, the monarchy revolves around the persona of the monarch. Decisions seem to stem from tradition and the preferences of the reigning monarch rather than a modern, inclusive approach. #badsuccessionplanning 2. Zero Autonomy for Employees: In a dysfunctional company, employees are often stifled and micromanaged. Royal family members often have limited autonomy, with their actions and decisions heavily scrutinized and controlled by tradition and protocol. #whydoihavetodothat? 3. Blatant Favoritism: Just as favoritism can poison the culture of a company, the monarchy exhibits clear favoritism among its members. Certain royals receive more money, attention, privileges, security, and responsibilities than others, leading to internal tensions and resentment. #escapetocalifornia 4. Resistance to Change: Dysfunctional companies often resist change, clinging to outdated practices and structures. Similarly, the monarchy moves at a glacial pace to adapt to societal shifts and demands for modernization, while maintaining traditions that no longer resonate with the public and members of the family. #$200Mfuneral 5. As I’ve been reflecting on President Jimmy Carter’s 100-year life I’ve realized his experience offers many lessons for family-run businesses in 2024. - The first is Long-Term Vision and Perseverance. President Carter didn’t stop working after he left office. Instead, he dedicated decades to humanitarian efforts through the Carter Center. It teaches us about focusing on sustainable legacies rather than short-term gains. Just like Carter’s continued commitment to causes like global health and housing, families can invest in their core values to create lasting impact for generations to come. - The next is Humility and Service. Even after leading the nation, Carter returned to Plains, GA and has lived a humble existence. He showed us all that leadership is about service, not status.
