Frankincense, Myrrh and protecting the last green belt against the Sahara. 💛 Improper or over tapping and poor general forest management is having a devastating effect on the land and forests around Metema. Trees are often tapped too frequently without proper rest periods which can result in them becoming less productive or dying. Over grazing and forest clearance for agriculture are other problems affecting Metema. This project will work with 11 cooperative groups in 9 kebeles within Metema woreda. The project will work with these groups to improve harvesting, promote better forest management and improve incomes. The promotion of various non-timber forest products such as honey production will further enhance incomes and increase the opportunities available. 🌳Happy Arbor Day!🌳 We just donated – and will continue to contribute – to TreePeople, a non-profit in the US that will plant trees throughout Southern California on our behalf. For some states, national arbor day is a civic holiday. The customary and heartwarming observance is to plant a tree. On the first ever Arbor Day, April 10 in 1872, an estimated one million trees were planted across the US. The United States is one of our main markets; since we are a responsible business and value sustainability, we decided to say thank you. What better way than to plant trees? Because of trees, communities are more resilient to extreme heat, drought and other related impacts of climate change.  For 50 years, TreePeople has supported more than 3 million people to take action for our environment by planting trees in forests, mountains, parks, and neighbourhoods. This is inspiring to us. We aspire to be more sustainable, to pay it forward, to contribute to an abundant planet that continues to freely give away its resources. It's not lost on us that effectively reaching supporters – spreading the word about and seeking support for important nonprofit work – requires paper. At Olmanyara tilil,as part of our afforestation activities, we go beyond just tree planting; there is a need to ensure that trees planted are taken care of and communities are engaged and educated. In partnership with local groups, we have set up a total of ten tree nurseries that cover four wards within Kieni East. These nurseries offer a steady supply of commercially important and indigenous trees that are suitable within the area. By involving the community in management of the nurseries, we are giving them ownership of their local environment. One of our strategies is increasing awareness and educating the community about the objective of managed replanting and the need to conserve forests, the long term benefits of which are immense. This makes it sure that tree planting is not an isolated one time effort but an ongoing commitment to regeneration of deforested land. Further, our programs have also created improved economic activities for the local people.
