🌍 Aging Populations are Transforming the Diaper Industry 👶➡️👴 The global population is aging, with the number of people aged 65+ set to more than double to 1.6 billion by 2050. In Japan, this trend is pronounced: births hit a record low in 2023, while nearly 30% of the population is now 65 or older. This shift is having a surprising impact on the diaper industry. The global adult diaper market was valued at $12.8B in 2023 and is projected to reach $15.5B by 2026. Japan's market alone is expected to grow to $1.9B by 2026. 📈 In contrast, sales of baby diapers have decreased. 📉 Oji Holdings, a Japanese manufacturer, will stop producing baby diapers in Japan to focus on adult incontinence products, reflecting this demographic shift. Today, we are marking an important day—Menstrual Hygiene Day. It's a day that many of us may be unaware of. It also raises awareness for a term some of us are unfamiliar with—“period poverty”, which refers to the struggle many low-income women and girls face while trying to afford menstrual products. It's crucial to normalize conversations around #menstruation and recognize the role male allies - including myself - play in raising awareness and bridging the conversational gap in this area. Be it in our homes or at the workplace, we must educate ourselves on the physiological and psychological aspects of #menstruation and #menopause and demonstrate empathy in how we empower women without treating it as a hindrance to their efficiency, performance or productivity. At Kyndryl, we are proud to foster an inclusive workspace where every individual’s needs are supported and respected. Through our Menstrual Hygiene program, we have educated more than 1500 students in India and distributed menstrual kits to students from marginalized communities. On our part, we have expanded our leave policy to include two days of paid time off per month (without documentation) for menstruation and menopause for our employees. We can achieve equity and inclusion at work and beyond only when advocate for real change and move past any stigma or behavioural bias towards menstruation. During this era, there was a prevailing belief in the "cult of domesticity," which idealized women as pure, virtuous, and primarily devoted to the roles of wife and mother. Menstruation was a topic considered indecent and unsuitable for open discussion. The absence of menstrual cycles, such as in menopause, was met with suspicion and misunderstandings. The lack of understanding about menopause and the associated hormonal changes likely contributed to societal mistrust or unease. Women who reached menopausal age might have been subject to various stereotypes, including notions of instability or a perceived loss of femininity. This lack of understanding and the cultural emphasis on women's reproductive roles could have led to distrust or discomfort when women stopped menstruating.
