Serna Bio is a remote-first company spread across two continents. We have carefully designed ways of working which allow us to rapidly progress work in an interdisciplinary, international environment. But every six months we spend a week together to review our progress and plan for the future. The opportunity to connect, celebrate successes, break bread with one another, and Escape (or fail to escape) Rooms is a force accelerator for our work and a highlight of the calendar.

In 2016 the Stämm saga began! Fast forward to 2018, we’re a squad of 7 Stämmers. IndieBio, the powerhouse of biotech accelerators, hits us up – Yuyo Llamazares Vegh and Federico D'Alvia Vegh get the call. By 2019, we're 17 strong, cutting the ribbon on our very own lab in Buenos Aires. Looking back to those times we could never forsee the place we are at now. In 2020, with 25 Stämmers on board, we realized we were short in space, it was time to expand. Lab, offices, and workshops, we created the ideal space for our stämmers to put their disruptive ideas to the test. We entered 2021 with 70 Stämmers – that's almost triple! Hard-working people attract like-minded teammates. Research and development blooms under interdisciplinary teams. In 2022 we've hit 170 Stämmers! Multiplying faster than we can count, a solid teamwork framework helped us grow without losing our focus. And now, in 2023, we're wrapping it up with 216 unique Stämmers, each of them bringing singular talents to the table. Looking back on an inspiring day at the #HarbourSymposium23 hosted by Roche about Corporate Listening. I was trying to listen carefully and these are my personal takaways: 🧠 Franca Parianen Lesemann explained from a neuroscientist point of view our natural tendency as human beings to fixate on our own perspective when examining events or beliefs #EgocentricBias. Only if we actively force ourselves to listen to other voices we can break out of this pattern. 💊 Roche CEO Thomas Schinecker shared that only 1-2 drugs make it to the market every year while at the same time starting over and over again with a large number of possible candidates. This is done at an annual CHF 13 billion invested. So listening well and having quick response loops in the development process is crucial #FailFast. 🤜🏼🤛🏼 HarbourClub is running a Reverse Mentoring program for communication leaders to listen & learn from young colleagues. What a great initiative! I’m happy to have signed up right away! 🔊Ramon De Marco made us hear sounds we never heard before (like the sound of a dying yeast cell 🥺) and demonstrated in an impressive way how sound can influence the way we perceive a space or a brand. Cutting edge #GenerativeAI tools like audiobreeze make it possible to easily generate individual sound worlds for brands. 📣 founders appreciation post 📣 The last weeks brought three board meetings at xista science ventures portfolio companies for me, and each one was well structured and thoroughly prepared. What stood out at all three meetings however was that the #founders included their #teams in the meetings and had them run excellent, enthousiastically presented #product #demos and discuss the status of their developments. So, big shout out to the founders and teams ReCatalyst, Sarcura and CellEctric Biosciences, well done! Founders, keep in mind your board members and investors might not be close to the daily work you do on your products, so while being honest and transparent, do show your #progress and #celebrate your achievements. Build your #team, #attitude and #culture early, it is paramount!

Above all, "scaling up" means being able to hand over! 🤝 In a start-up, it's normal to do everything yourself, be on hand everywhere, put out every fire and take responsibility for everything yourself. That's right and important, because it's the only way we as founders know what positions we need to build up next. 👩🏻💻 However, this no longer works at the latest when you want to scale up. Of course, the overall #responsibility always remains with us as managing directors and founders, but we have to be able to delegate responsibilities and rely on employees being able to do the job at least as well as we do. 💪🏽 This sometimes means that things are done differently than we founders would do, but it doesn't necessarily mean that it's worse. It's also normal for things to take longer, because more topics need to be agreed with colleagues - and we founders are no longer the all-knowing dumping ground... 🗑️ But being a good employee in a start-up is not just about having the expertise for the job. If the employees are to be worthy replacements for us as founders, they also need to believe in the vision, have a passion for the product and the will to do everything in their position to make our company successful. 🚀 Sometimes we prefer to leave positions vacant a little longer than to fill them with the wrong person. However, we at Corbiota have been very successful in recent weeks and months when it comes to building our team. Because that's the only way it works, like here at Andreas Hermes Akademie: Our Junior Product Manager Anouk-Sophie Krings rocks the stage and convinces the audience of us and our vision.
