As a Summer 2024 Serve Virginia Honor Roll honoree, Dee Dee Schrader was inspired by her grandmother to start A Bright Spot, Inc., which sends free cards of care to seniors, military personnel far from home, children in foster placement, refugee children, children in the hospital, and anyone else needing a lift. “For one moment of the day, they can forget everything and stop, pause, and know they are loved and that they do matter,” says Dee Dee. Since Dee Dee started the effort in 2021, A Bright Spot has brightened the lives of over 31,000 people in 48 states, with the support of 613 individual volunteers and 30 group volunteers. Hayley Ann Boswell ⭐️This hit me. Our eldest is onto her 7th school and all four of our children have faced challenges with their education due to being Defence Kidz. Thankfully, they have also thrived. As Defence families, we do not get to pick where we live. The amount of times some snarky person on the phone has said to me, "Why didn't you have them on the wait list from birth?" We, as Defence families, don't get that luxury. How about priority of placement for Defence Kidz in ALL childcare centres. Who needs respite more than a Defence spouse doing it solo? How about State School of CHOICE? We don't get to pick where we live, so how about allowing us to pick the State school that best suits our child regardless of catchment area? Small actionable outcomes that would give Defence families a little bit of power to determine the best educational outcomes for their children. These options are already available to at risk children, so the framework is there. How about our Defence Kidz?

Did you know that military children move an average of 6 to 9 times during their Reception-year 12 education? The resilience they exhibit is nothing short of extraordinary. But it's not just about the numbers; it's about the faces behind them. These little faces are the reason we advocate so fiercely and passionately. We recently created this video that perfectly encapsulates the hard times and the celebrations of our defence families, with the photos supplied by our defence community. It's a poignant reminder of why we do what we do. We're not just advocating for policies or benefits; we're advocating for real people, real families, and real lives. As someone deeply involved in this advocacy, I've seen firsthand the difference it can make. From improved educational opportunities to connecting events for veteran families, the changes we fight for have a tangible impact on these families' lives. It's not just about making their lives easier; it's about honouring their sacrifices and ensuring they have the support they deserve. But there's still so much work to be done. As we look to the future, we must continue to push for meaningful change. We must listen to these families, understand their unique challenges, and work tirelessly to address them. So, I ask you, what changes do you think are most needed to support our veteran families? What can we do to ensure their voices are heard and their needs are met? Share your thoughts in the comments below. If you found this post insightful or helpful, please give it a like and consider reposting it to spread the word. Together, we can make a difference. #MilitaryFamilies #Advocacy #SupportOurveteranfamilies Kelly Hopkins Prof. Neil Curtis Rochelle Feenan Liam V. Rebecca Zanol Miranda Van Hooff

It's wonderful to hear about Craig Newmark's involvement in promoting the Campaign for Inclusion (CFI) at Blue Star Families. The values of CFI, as you've shared, are crucial in fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for military and veteran families. Let's break down the key components of these values: 1. **Commitment**: One of the foundational values of CFI is a strong commitment to strengthening military families by providing diverse resources and benefits to meet their various needs. This commitment underscores the importance of supporting and uplifting these families across different aspects of their lives. 2. **Family**: CFI recognizes the importance of ensuring that military families feel included and welcomed in the communities where they live and serve. By emphasizing the significance of family and community support, the campaign strives to create a sense of belonging and connection for these families. 3. **Impact**: CFI is focused on creating positive and meaningful impacts through its programs and engagements. By intentionally designing initiatives that directly benefit military and veteran families, the campaign aims to enhance their experiences and promote inclusion and belonging in communities nationwide. By embodying these values of commitment, family, and impact, the Campaign for Inclusion at Blue Star Families demonstrates a genuine dedication to supporting military and veteran families and fostering a more inclusive environment for them. It's heartening to see influential figures like Craig Newmark contributing to such important initiatives that can make a real difference in the lives of these families. #CFI #CampaignForInclusion #senseofbelonging #inclusion #militaryfamilies #diversity Kathy Roth-Douquet Lindsay Knight, PhD Thomas Bostick Gwen Bingham Justin Schmitt Mark Elliott Fernando Snowden-Lorence Anicia Myers Michele Matchett-Godfrey MBA, AFC® Danielle Lankford Tiffany King Anicia Myers

Is it voluntary work if it's mandatory? 💭 The Conservative Party's proposed National Service Plan suggests that all 18-year-olds in the UK should complete a year of community volunteering or military training. The goal is to foster civic duty and national pride. My first thought was: Can mandatory service truly be labeled as 'voluntary' work? What are your thoughts on the impact and implications of this initiative? #NationalService #YouthEngagement #PublicPolicy #Volunteering

Eric Luley, I am a 60% disabled vet. I have never attempted to have my 60% rating increased. every single day my life is effected by my disability. I have been told by numerous VA Healthcare workers that I should be at 100%. I have spent the last seven years not wanting to bother with attempting a reevaluation, because I feel that others are in greater need of the appointments and effort. Please remember that the military is specifically marketed as a job/career to people who tend to believe that they owe a debt to society, or at least believe that something greater than themselves exists. The amount of money and time used by the VBA in an effort to prevent fraud is greater than any other government entity. Because of the distribution of budgets, it cannot even be tracked. While there may be dishonest advocates and veterans, I believe that the greater problem is veterans and their survivors not wanting to bother with asking, or demanding their rightful benefits. It is important to remember that the military is a part of the government, and it employs service members. The government provides all other employees with workplace protections, and requires all private sector employers to provide workplace protections. Workers Compensation laws & regulations exist to assist injured workers and their survivors in getting made whole. The VA is basically 'workers compensation' for service members. It is not charity, or a low income program. We as the citizens of the United States are the employers of the service members, and we have a moral obligation to ensure that anyone injured in our employment is taken care of, as are their survivors.

Honestly guys… This is a little tongue in cheek, but there are “veteran advocates” on this platform that believe a 100% disability should be a personal goal upon your transition. This may be an unpopular opinion but “100% disabled” should be a fairly difficult standard to attain, for obvious reasons. I worked with disabled and vulnerable veterans when I first retired, and I definitely saw some stuff that raised my eyebrows. And to the vets who are doing the right thing, served honorably, and have to deal with long term and lifetime issues, I have nothing but respect and compassion for you. The VA should absolutely take care of you. Thoughts? #veterans #advocate #disability #military
