Children's sense of belonging and agency is supported when they see their lives reflected in storybooks. Being part of a military, Veteran, and First Responder families can be tough if their parents have a moral injury. It impacts affect the whole family, and children are often silent sufferers. Research-based storybooks using family narratives give voice to their experiences and support children's understandings. Military families must jump through extra hoops to receive an evidence-based autism service called applied behavior analysis (ABA). One parent must complete a stress assessment measuring the parent's stress level every 6 months. The following are examples of questions on the parent stress index: I often have the feeling that I cannot handle things well. I find myself giving up more of my life to meet my children’s needs than I ever expected. I feel trapped by my responsibilities as a parent. ONLY parents seeking ABA services must answer these questions every 6 months in order for their children to receive the therapy recommended by their doctor. No other group of parents within the DoD healthcare system is required to complete a stress assessment for their children to receive medical care. Kirsten Goodson is an MAA team member who shared her personal story to the committee reviewing the Autism Care Demonstration (ACD) program. MAA will continue to advocate for the removal of this barrier to receiving ABA services. Sr Advocacy Advisor, Peer Support Specialist, Veteran Outreach @ Coalition to Salute America's Heroes | Advocating for Veterans' Well-being
Good afternoon, LinkedIn Community! Have you heard of Peer Support Programs for Service Members? Let’s discuss what this term, Peer Support Program, means to you specifically. As we, Coalition to Salute America's Heroes, strive to improve the support systems in place for our Service Members, I am interested in hearing your thoughts on any gaps in services that exist, the different mental/behavioral health challenges faced, whether there is still a stigma surrounding mental/behavioral health, and if there are enough or too many resources available. By sharing our experiences and insights, we can work towards improving the support systems in place for our Service Members. I believe that together, we can provide the necessary resources and support that make a true difference to those who need it most. Thank you in advance for your contributions to this important conversation. David W. Hayley Ann Boswell ⭐️This hit me. Our eldest is onto her 7th school and all four of our children have faced challenges with their education due to being Defence Kidz. Thankfully, they have also thrived. As Defence families, we do not get to pick where we live. The amount of times some snarky person on the phone has said to me, "Why didn't you have them on the wait list from birth?" We, as Defence families, don't get that luxury. How about priority of placement for Defence Kidz in ALL childcare centres. Who needs respite more than a Defence spouse doing it solo? How about State School of CHOICE? We don't get to pick where we live, so how about allowing us to pick the State school that best suits our child regardless of catchment area? Small actionable outcomes that would give Defence families a little bit of power to determine the best educational outcomes for their children. These options are already available to at risk children, so the framework is there. How about our Defence Kidz?

Did you know that military children move an average of 6 to 9 times during their Reception-year 12 education? The resilience they exhibit is nothing short of extraordinary. But it's not just about the numbers; it's about the faces behind them. These little faces are the reason we advocate so fiercely and passionately. We recently created this video that perfectly encapsulates the hard times and the celebrations of our defence families, with the photos supplied by our defence community. It's a poignant reminder of why we do what we do. We're not just advocating for policies or benefits; we're advocating for real people, real families, and real lives. As someone deeply involved in this advocacy, I've seen firsthand the difference it can make. From improved educational opportunities to connecting events for veteran families, the changes we fight for have a tangible impact on these families' lives. It's not just about making their lives easier; it's about honouring their sacrifices and ensuring they have the support they deserve. But there's still so much work to be done. As we look to the future, we must continue to push for meaningful change. We must listen to these families, understand their unique challenges, and work tirelessly to address them. So, I ask you, what changes do you think are most needed to support our veteran families? What can we do to ensure their voices are heard and their needs are met? Share your thoughts in the comments below. If you found this post insightful or helpful, please give it a like and consider reposting it to spread the word. Together, we can make a difference. #MilitaryFamilies #Advocacy #SupportOurveteranfamilies Kelly Hopkins Prof. Neil Curtis Rochelle Feenan Liam V. Rebecca Zanol Miranda Van Hooff

Retired Military Special Needs Dad || I help military special needs families by highlighting quality of life issues
For the #military #specialneeds community, please pay attention to this last NASEM public comment session for the Autism Care Demonstration (ACD). For other #EFMP / SNP families NOT enrolled in the ACD, you are probably wondering if you should care about this particular issue...you should! The ACD is a symptom of a lot of bad policies and outdated laws. First, the fight to make #ABA a basic benefit has been going on for over a decade because DoD doesn't believe ABA meets the required levels of evidence. This is despite the American Medical Association CPT committee (the group that determines billing categories based on medical evidence) awarding ABA codes the highest level. Second, ABA is restricted to those diagnosed with #autism only - meaning if your child has another diagnosis and could medically benefit from ABA, he or she can't receive it. This can be perceived to be discrimination against the #exceptionalneeds community because access to healthcare isn't based on medical necessity. Third, ABA is restricted in settings outside the home and clinic. The ability to serve our #specialeducation kids in the school setting is limited and working on skills in the community setting is harder to justify. There is plenty more to unpack for the ACD, but the underlying laws and policies need to be addressed to ensure they don't negatively impact access to therapies that benefit our #miitarychildren. We need #mentalhealthparity laws to protect the #militaryfamily community! The Kennedy Forum #Army #AirForce #MarineCorps #Navy #SpaceForce #disability #militaryspouse
🔥#EFMP and SNP families, one LAST chance to publicly voice your support to make #ABA a #TRICARE basic benefit! #MAA started almost 3 years ago to ensure ABA services are provided according to standards of care without unnecessary barriers. Together, these #militarypouses, #veterans, and #servicemembers have fought to end TRICARE's Autism Care Demonstration (ACD), secure ABA services as a regular TRICARE benefit, and restore services in all settings which are medically necessary for our #militarychildren. Why are we so passionate about this❓ For one MAA member, the stress assessments asking about his sexual life and happiness with his child was too much and this team member could no longer remain silent. He reached out to his local Congressional member offices. For another member, the extremely difficult process of finding ABA services at each new duty station and the complicated two-year referral process negatively affected her #mentalhealth as she worried if she would lose services for her child. This mother took action and went to Capitol Hill to raise awareness and advocate. Another team member experienced a tough #PCS process as the ABA provider network dried up as one after another clinic stopped taking TRICARE. This member was forced to pay out of pocket for civilian healthcare in order to avoid separating the family and stay at the duty station with her husband. This team member shared her story with the independent committee reviewing the ACD. 🗣The FINAL NASEM committee public meeting for the #Autism Care Demonstration occurs on June 20th! This independent committee is creating a report that will determine the future of ABA services for military families. Don’t regret NOT sharing your story; you can fill out an anonymous comment online, share your story with an MAA member to carry your message in-person at the meeting, or share your concerns directly with the committee by speaking virtually or in-person ⬇️Sign up at the link below if you wish to make a public comment. https://bit.ly/3X18wTI The committee loves to hear from #specialneeds #militaryfamilies, so share your feelings on the importance of ABA services for your family and the barriers you’ve experienced. #airforce #army #coastguard #marinecorps #navy #spaceforce #militaryspouse #militarycommunity #qualityoflife #MHPAEA #advocacy

Adoption is wildly expensive these days, and for many military families looking to build their families, it's the only option due to extremely limited policy support. If you're a military member who has gone the route of adoption, what was your experience like? It might seem like a good idea to name a trusted adult to receive money for the purpose of caring for your kids 💰, but unfortunately, this does nothing to guarantee your kids receive the financial support you wanted for them. 😟 Read the blog to learn why. 👀▶️ https://lnkd.in/g67fq7Dy #compasslegalplanning #compasslegalplanningOK #estateplanning #willsandtrusts #OKestateplanningattorney #powerofattorney #healthcaredirectives #kidsprotectionplan #assetprotection #buildyourlegacy #familylegacy #outdooradventure #OKmom #OKdad #OKveterans #OKmilitary #guidingfamiliesforward

You probably imagine who you’d want caring for your kids if something happened to you. 👪 But if you don’t put your plans on paper, the final decision of who will care for your kids, raise them, and manage their money if you die or become incapacitated is left up to a judge who doesn’t know them or your family. ⚖️ Read this week’s blog to learn more. 💻 👀▶️ https://lnkd.in/dbb3G69R #compasslegalplanning #compasslegalplanningOK #estateplanning #willsandtrusts #OKestateplanningattorney #powerofattorney #healthcaredirectives #kidsprotectionplan #assetprotection #buildyourlegacy #familylegacy #outdooradventure #OKmom #OKdad #OKveterans #OKmilitary #guidingfamiliesforward

Our new paper explores four themes gathered from children from military families, and their parents and educators. These are family transitions (parents moving in and out of the household due to deployment and training), mobility (due to frequent relocations), and risk and protective factors. We also explore how we used their narratives and other lived and living experience narratives to co-create free online research-based resources.
