#Aquaculture has reportedly surpassed wild fisheries in animal production for the first time according to a study by the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) The findings of the report show that in 2022, aquaculture yielded 94.4 million tonnes of aquatic animal production – 51% of the total and 57% of the production destined for human consumption. “Aquaculture has a major role to play, particularly in Africa where its great potential is not yet realised,” the report adds. The African Food Fellowship is building the capacity of aquaculture food systems leaders in Africa to realise this great potential. Malaysia aims to achieve 40 percent aquaculture production by 2030 to better balance the country's fisheries needs, said Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup. He said that currently, #aquaculture accounts for 30 percent of total fisheries production, and the country recorded a per capita fish and fishery products consumption of 45 kilograms last year. “The sector also supports 148,000 fishermen and aquaculture farmers, so realizing the importance of the sector, various efforts to manage and develop the fisheries sector sustainably is a priority of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to ensure long-term prosperity and well-being. “To achieve this target, we are also taking several important steps including appropriate equipment, applying the use of more efficient innovation technology to ensure the sustainability and efficiency of our fishing industry including conservation efforts at the same time improving fisheries-related acts,” he said. He said this after launching the 21st International Institute of Fisheries Economics and Trade (IIFET) Conference here today. Meanwhile, Arthur said the fisheries sector is an important part of Malaysia's food security, socio-economic development, economic and trade opportunities as well as cultural and environmental protection efforts. He said that last year, the fisheries sector produced approximately 1.79 million metric tonnes of fish, contributing 0.7 per cent to the country's gross domestic product (GDP) with a trade value of US$3.51 billion. “By 2030, we need to produce 2.55 million metric tonnes of fish per year to meet the increasing demand, so we aim to increase the self-sufficiency ratio or rate to 97 per cent by 2030 from the current 90 per cent,” he said. For the first time, farmed aquatic production has exceeded the catch from traditional captured fisheries, highlighting the potential of aquaculture in meeting the rising global demand for seafood. The U.N. Food and Agriculture Agency reported that global fisheries and aquaculture production in 2022 reached a record 223.2 million metric tons, with aquaculture production hitting an unprecedented 130.9 MMT. According to the latest biennial report by the Rome-based Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), aquatic animals accounted for 51% of the total aquaculture production in 2022, totaling 94.4 MMT. The report also stated that global per capita annual consumption of aquatic animal foods rose to 20.7 kg in 2022 from 9.1 kg in 1961. 🌊 Global Fish Production Insights: Capture Fisheries vs. Aquaculture 🌊 Did you know there are two primary types of commercial fish production, measured in metric tons? Capture fisheries involve catching fish from the wild, while aquaculture focuses on raising fish for consumption. China leads the world, producing nearly 86 million metric tons of fish annually—over 60 million metric tons more than the second-largest producer, Indonesia. While China's capture fisheries produce a significant 13 million metric tons of wild-caught fish, their aquaculture production dominates at 72.8 million metric tons. Following China, Indonesia produces 21.8 million metric tons, India 14.4 million, and Vietnam 8.2 million. These top producers have a higher output from aquaculture compared to capture fishing. However, the next three countries—Peru (6.7 million metric tons), Russia (5.4 million metric tons), and the United States (4.7 million metric tons)—rely more heavily on capture fisheries. Interestingly, the U.S. leans towards wild-caught fish, with aquaculture making up less than 10% of its total production. This preference may stem from the belief that wild-caught fish are leaner and the misconception that farm fishing involves overcrowded and dirty tanks. New paper on the use of byproducts from fish processing from seven case studies covering industrialized fisheries and aquaculture. Our study shows that across the case studies on average 72% of byproducts are utilized. Of the case studies, Norwegian Atlantic salmon has the highest utilization rate of 99% and and wild Alaskan salmon the lowest at 37%. Scale appears to be a make-or-break for the economic feasibility of investing in new production lines for handling byproducts, and helps to explain variations in utilization rates across case studies. https://lnkd.in/dZRP9FSU #MARIGREEN #FOLOU
