Here are nine core areas India can focus to follow suit: 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝘂𝗲𝗹𝘀: Transitioning from fossil fuels like coal and diesel to cleaner alternatives such as natural gas, #solarenergy sources, and #electricvehicles can significantly reduce emissions. 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀: Enforce stricter #emission standards for vehicles, industries, and power plants to curb the release of pollutants. 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Invest in expanding and improving #publictransportation systems to encourage people to use alternatives to private vehicles. 𝗘𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: Implement urban planning strategies that promote compact, walkable cities with mixed-use development to reduce reliance on private transportation. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Implement stricter regulations and monitoring systems to control industrial emissions and promote cleaner industrial practices. 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆: Implement stringent regulations and practices to minimize dust emissions from construction sites and manage waste properly to prevent open burning. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Raise public awareness about the health impacts of air pollution and encourage behavioural changes to reduce individual contributions to pollution. 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Collaborate with neighbouring cities and states to address transboundary air pollution issues and implement joint strategies. India's National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), started in 2019, aims to reduce harmful air pollutant particles (PM) by 20-30% from 2017 levels by 2024 (target later increased to 40% by 2026). However, it faces major challenges.  As part of NCAP, cities with high air pollution must make and follow Clean Air Action Plans (CAAPs). But on average, only 60% of funds allocated for this have been used so far. 27% of cities have spent less than 30% of their NCAP budgets. Delays happen due to bureaucratic red tape, lengthy approval processes, and lack of standard procedures. Importantly, most cities lack scientific tools like 1. Emissions Inventories (EI) to calculate pollution sources 2. Source Apportionment (SA) studies to analyze pollution contributions 3. Air Quality (AQ) modeling to understand pollution dispersion - all crucial for effective planning. Only 37% of cities have completed EI and SA studies to identify sources of their air pollution. NCAP relies on pollution concentration data showing people's exposure levels. But this overlooks pollution coming from outside city limits. Many current measures only target primary PM pollution while ignoring other pollutants that create PM.  For NCAP's success, cities need to use scientific studies, get proper funding, and swiftly take pollution-reducing actions. Cutting bureaucracy through shared technical reviews is key. Prior budgeting is vital, as funding depends on how much each city reduces its yearly PM levels. Overcoming gaps in data, planning, and implementation is crucial for NCAP to effectively tackle India's unhealthy air crisis.

A heaps of thanks to all those who are working their tails off to tame the air pollution in Delhi. Sure that all the hands and the cook on the deck need to extend their support. These efforts and energies on a titanic scale expended now could only be a bandaid solution to tide over the current crisis. It follows that similar or more of these would be needed year after year given the fact that the root of the problem hasn't yet been touched even by barge poles. Yes, unless and until a semblance of a policy framework to ban or cap the growth and use of vehicles is in place everyone and their cousins would only be sparing at the spigot and spilling at the bung. A long-term vision is conspicuous by its absence. It might sound cynical but is the stark reality. It is a wake-up call to all large Indian cities. Unless #chennai makes efforts to get all its ducks in a row the crisis might strike it unawares.
