A Message to the UK Construction Industry We once built with pencil, paper, and heart— Exploring new ideas without fear, Trusting our hands, our eyes, our shared craft To make homes and spaces that now, appears past. Now we lean too hard on rules and screens, Letting numbers and codes decide our dreams. We’ve lost the human touch— The on-site adjustments, the personal feel, That spark we discover only when we stand amongst bricks and steel. Why are architects no longer in charge? Because we’ve allowed software and systems To shape our craft. We debate more fees, create more checks, With less freedom to create, thus vexed. British Developers shoulder big risks, Land is expensive, And councils often lack the hands-on to respect To guide what actually happens on site. Meanwhile, new legislation keeps pushing up costs, And we’re left wondering how people can afford a home. Brexit, tight budgets, changing energy rules— Believe me we are now buckling to these rules We blame each other—architects, planners, builders, developers— But this blame helps no one. Let’s remember why we build: To shelter people, To shape our towns with pride, To carry forward our heritage for ancestors in pride. We must reconnect with those who actually lay the bricks, Pour the concrete, and raise the timber. We need to learn from the past— From the days when details were decided on-site, When skill and care mattered more than contracts might. If developing nations can grow bold skylines fast, Surely, we can build homes 1.5million exact. Let’s come together— Architects, developers, planners, and builders— To revive true craftsmanship. And in doing so, We restore our identity, We honor our tradition, And we create buildings that stand the test of time.

This strategy will target productivity through improved procurement, workforce planning, data management, and the promotion of innovative building methods. - Powerhouse Castle Hill won the Sir Zelman Cowen Award for Public Architecture, underlining advancements in public project standards. The jury praised Powerhouse Castle Hill as “an exemplar of architecture as an interface between the public and research, preservation and curation.” Corporate Developments - Coates Engineering provides a guide to the market trends, challenges and opportunities shaping the construction sector in 2024, aligning with industry goals for reduced environmental impact. “There is a cautious optimism surrounding 2024,” explained James Lawrence, Group Manager for Customer & Markets at Coates. “While residential construction is declining, nationally the market remains in an upward cycle driven by concurrent booms in road, railway and renewables construction.” - Alissa Birch of Capital Luxury Residences was celebrated as Australia's Female CEO of the Year 2024, recognizing her exceptional leadership in residential development. Environmental and Regulatory Updates - The Australian Institute of Architects opposed a proposed 10-year freeze on the National Construction Code, arguing it could stifle progressive building standards and sustainability initiatives. This freeze is part of a $5 billion housing plan led by the Federal Coalition. - Labour shortages continue to impede the sector, affecting productivity and project timelines, The Urban Developer reports. This is a great article about the challenges and opportunities of using modular construction, a form of industrialized construction. I agree with John Buongiorno. His full quote is “Once they have done a successful modular project, clients are not going to go back to building conventionally.
