As I embrace my new role as a Store Manager in the food industry, I can't help but reflect on my dynamic and rewarding experience in customer support. Managing a team of over 140 dedicated professionals, overseeing a regional team, and opening a new site in the COVID time has been an incredible journey, filled with unique challenges and valuable lessons. The essence of customer support goes beyond just metrics and numbers. At its core, it’s about listening to and taking care of our customers, ensuring their needs are met with empathy and efficiency. This philosophy has always been at the heart of my approach to customer support. I miss the daily interactions with my team, the problem-solving sessions, and the collective drive to improve customer satisfaction. It’s the team’s dedication and hard work that make a real difference in the customer support journey. In this ever-evolving field, the key takeaway remains clear: customers need to be heard and valued. If you’re a customer-facing professional, your customer service skills can change an experience on a dime and create a meaningful impact. Here’s what happened: I took my family, including my 3 kids 7,4, and 18 months, to Disneyland. While there, our stroller we bought just for Disneyland broke. I asked the kids to go say hi to a character so I could mutter some bad words under my breath. We went and asked the customer relations folks if they had any strollers we could rent. Here’s where their Disney service shined: The representative could have just told us that we were there on Christmas, which is one of their busiest seasons, and that there wasn’t anything he could do. What he did instead was show empathy for our broken stroller, and said that although he couldn’t offer a stroller, he knew this would chew into our time trying to deal with it. He gave us 2 fast pass tickets per person with us, and said that he hoped this would help recover some of the lost time. Take away: it cost him nothing to go above and beyond. He was creative and thought outside of the box to improve our experience. If you give your customers an above and beyond experience, it can let them know that you see them and want them to have the best experience. And who doesn’t like feeling seen? Some companies have a chief customer officer or chief experience officer. These people, in these positions, are tasked with not only analyzing data and looking for better ways to improve service, but also creating a culture that’s focused on the customer. At the end of the day, all departments need to be working together, not as separate, siloed departments. They’re all focused on one thing: creating a great experience for customers that’s going to make them come back and do business with you again.
