An NPR article was published last week to shed light on the stress that can occur for kids visiting a healthcare institution. ChildKind Advisory Board member Dr. Stefan Friedrichsdorf outlines the importance of integrating pain management strategies by using these simple steps that clinicians and parents can follow to improve a child's hospital experience: - Apply numbing cream, an over-the-counter lidocaine, 30 minutes before a shot. - Breastfeed babies or give them a pacifier dipped in sugar water, to comfort them while getting a shot. - Use distractions, like teddy bears, pinwheels, or bubbles, to divert attention away from the needle. - No more pinning kids down on an exam table.
