In this OOCTV segment, Tamara A. Topoleski, M.D. a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in pediatric surgery at Orlando Orthopaedic Center, shares backpack safety tips.
There is a popular belief that carrying backpacks can cause scoliosis. However, this is not true. Improper use of backpacks can lead to muscle strain instead. To avoid this, it is essential to wear backpacks correctly by positioning them appropriately and placing the heaviest items against your back. Dr. Topoleski recommends carrying only essential items to reduce unnecessary weight. Remember to follow these tips to wear your backpack safely and comfortably. #BackpackSafety and #Orthopaedics.
Dr. Steven Stylianos, chief of the Division of Pediatric Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia and surgeon-in-chief at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, has one simple motivation for his surgical career: giving kids the chance to live a fruitful life.

It's been over a decade since Best Practice Guidelines (BPGs) were published to decrease surgical site infection (SSI) in pediatric spinal deformity. Unfortunately, successful implementation hasn't yet been established.
Columbia Orthopedics faculty Michael Vitale and Benjamin Roye MD-MPH contributed to this study evaluating surgeon compliance the BPG. The hypothesis was BPG authors and surgeons with more experience, higher caseload, and awareness of the BPG would have higher compliance. Remember how Wayfair got really evil for a bit and people stopped loving them? Or all the awful layoffs done poorly, how it affects brand perception?
I was just talking with a peer *today* who has had candidates back out at offer (even very high ones) after finding unsettling glassdoor reviews.
SO... insurance companies, I know it's a little like utilities where we're kind of stuck with who our employer offers. But what happens when HR people see things like this? When they hear the horror stories, and they get the choice where parity exists across plans and costs, but one company's just a giant ahole?
And for CVS Health, who is associated with a much warmer image, how does exposure like this - since CVS is right in the name of Aetna, a CVS Health Company since the acquisition - impact you when CVS is a company that consumer can choose - or NOT choose - every day? Mixing b2b and b2c means you are now more susceptible to whims, and when people can't quit their crappy insurance company, they CAN quit their (formerly beloved) preferred drug store or minute clinic.
My bonus daughter who I love so dearly just had this same surgery a few weeks ago. This is already stressful enough for the patient and the family, and do you think they would WANT to have this for FUNSIES? AYFKM. Of COURSE it's medically necessary. You KNOW it's medically necessary. Your GUIDE BOOK says it's medically necessary. Quality of life aside, how about the severe, lifelong injury that can result from denial of this?
I'm baffled, and I'm pissed. The marketer in me is saying wth are you DOING with this, talk about tripping over a dollar to pick up a penny. But the mom, and the human in me, is saying wth are you doing with this as PEOPLE.
Not my usual post, I know. But I'd appreciate added visibility from my network, I'd be grateful.
PLEASE SHARE!
I’m extremely alarmed and disappointed in Aetna, a CVS Health Company refusing to
Approve my daughter’s life altering spinal surgery! Her surgery was denied a day before scheduled surgery at one of the most prestigious hospitals in the world with a veteran pediatric orthopedic surgeon who is well respected. I am reaching out to Karen S. Lynch and Brian A. Kane to over ride this denial and approve the surgery which is in appeals. Every time I call @aetna im given a different story and they keep pushing back an appeals decision which will
Interfere with my daughter’s second attempt at surgery. Her surgery meets all the criteria in Aetna, a CVS Health Company policy bulletin.
