We are looking forward to your submissions! ______________________________________________ Dear Colleague, The Planning Committee invites you to submit an abstract for presentation at the 2024 Latinx Mental Health Conference. The conference will be held at The California Endowment, Los Angeles on Wednesday, September 25, 2024. Conference Description: The conference is dedicated to developing a platform for idea exchange, knowledge sharing and content creation to empower those serving the Latinx population. This year, we are looking for proposals that delve into life's various stages and diversity. Please indicate which stage of life (infancy, adolescence, mid-life, elder life) category your proposal examines. Examples of these broad categories are: Parenthood/ Maternal Health/ Adolescence/ Aging and Mental Health etc. Submission Guidelines & Procedure: Please e-mail your abstract to latinxmh@gmail.com or fax 818-936-0135 with the following information: • The primary category you would like your abstract to be considered under (see above) • Type of presentation: Lecture/workshop/panel discussion • A 250-word description of your proposed presentation. • At least 3 measurable learning objectives for the session • Three Pre/ Post questions to assess learning in your session • Presenter bio of 150 words or less. Let’s rethink healthcare  I love that Denmark are taking a new approach to “putative” mental illness with the redesign of their latest psychiatric hospital and their intention to reframe mental disorders to destigmatised - it’s definitely a step in the right direction, however, I believe I t’s important to remember that just because something looks like psychiatry, doesn’t mean it is psychiatric. There are a multitude of causalities that bring inflammation of the brain resulting in putative “mental illness” and behavioural abnormalities that have us wondering where our loved ones have disappeared to. We need to change this outdated social construct and recognise what is truly creating the increase of behavioural issues in our globe and admit we’ve been treating the issues incorrectly which is why medications DO NOT work.  Head traumas, tumours, abuse, stress, spillover of pathogens from animals to humans, processed foods, pollution, substance abuse, etc etc etc are just some of the root cause of inflammation of the brain resulting in abnormal behaviours. April’s story in the Washington post recently is just one representative story - after 20yrs of misdiagnosis goes home after it’s discovered an immune issue was responsible for her illness. “New research suggests that a subset of patients with psychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia may actually have autoimmune disease that attacks the brain” There are too many stories showing how wrong we have been about psychiatry so #letsrethinkhealthcare  Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/e4Se2KND

Unraveling the Impact of Childhood Trauma on Mental Health A recent study conducted by researchers at the Karolinska Institutet and University of Iceland, and highlighted on ScienceDaily, offers groundbreaking insights into how adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) affect our mental health trajectory into adulthood (https://lnkd.in/eX7EY43F). This study is distinguished by its novel approach, employing a twin study design to dissect the contributions of genetic and environmental factors within families to the development of psychiatric disorders. The findings compellingly argue for the implementation of holistic, family-based interventions in mental healthcare. By acknowledging the complex interplay between genetic predispositions and shared environmental influences, the research advocates for a more nuanced understanding of mental health that goes beyond the individual. Particularly alarming is the pronounced impact of sexual abuse and the exacerbated effects of enduring multiple forms of adversity. These revelations underscore the urgent need for targeted prevention and support mechanisms that can address the multifaceted challenges faced by survivors. This study is a clarion call for enhanced awareness and action to mitigate the long-lasting consequences of childhood adversities.
