‘What if there was a system that has the power to say what our communities and infrastructure will be like in the future? That lays out where cycle routes go, what roads are built (or not built), what housing and community facilities are needed, where green corridors and nature reserves could be, where energy is going to be generated and transmitted, and more? 🌺At full council meeting on the 12 December, Tamworth Borough Council made a Nature Recovery Declaration to help tackle the climate and nature crisis. 🌲This Nature Recovery Declaration is intended to develop and build on the work already being undertaken by the council and increase collaboration with other authorities of the Staffordshire Sustainability Board with regards to the climate and nature crisis. 🌷The declaration will help focus on the important commitments to the environment by helping create more, bigger, better, and joined up habitats. Investing in nature recovery and nature-based solutions will also help alleviate and resolve impacts of climate change. 🦋In making this declaration, Tamworth Borough Council are making a commitment to undertake targeted actions which make a real difference to nature locally and ensure that Tamworth Borough Council makes a positive contribution to the Local Nature Recovery Strategy and the Nature Recovery Network, by embedding nature recovery across council policy and all work areas. Norwich City Council, alongside the Norwich 2040 City Vision Partnership, has formally adopted a target for Norwich to be net zero by 2045. This means that the city aims to balance the amount of greenhouse gases it releases with the amount removed from the atmosphere. To help the council reach its 2045 net zero target, they’re working with the Norwich Climate Commission to develop an innovative and comprehensive Climate Action Plan for Norwich. This plan will set out what we need to do as a city to achieve our 2045 target, and what we need to do to ensure the city remains resilient and prosperous as the climate changes. We've launched our latest Net Zero Action Plan - an action-based strategy focussed on what the Council and other organisations across the city can do to slow the effects of climate change. Did you know that the Council is only responsible for just 1% of the city's overall carbon emissions? So while the new NZAP does contain actions for us, this version of the plan is far more outwardly focussed and has specific actions for engagement and city-wide behaviour. Councillor Tom Briars-Delve explains: "We have worked long and hard on this plan to ensure that it sets out a clear pathway towards significantly reducing the city's carbon output. "But we can't do it alone - we have to have the backing of not just residents but the other large organisations that contribute to our city life. "That's why this plan is far more outwardly facing. We've ramped up how we'll engage with partners and with residents through our Climate Connections project so that together we can ensure that Plymouth is environmentally friendly as it can possibly be." Nothing feels more powerful than local heroes leading the charge in climate action!✨ As we know, every small action counts when it comes to climate sustainability. While global commitments are essential, the groundwork often starts at local levels. In recent years, I've seen a burgeoning interest in localised climate action plans. Municipalities and cities are actively creating or implementing their own sustainability roadmaps. These blueprints not only align with larger national goals but also cater specifically to the unique needs of local communities and ecosystems. By integrating renewable energy sources, enhancing green spaces, and promoting sustainable urban planning, municipalities - big and small - are setting remarkable examples. For example, have you seen the incredible work that the City of Calgary is doing on the Community Energy Improvement Program - similar to property assessed clean energy in other places. There is tremendous uptake on this program by Calgarians to reduce the GHG emissions of their homes. Buildings account for a significant portion of Calgarians' GHGs and access to capital allows people to make these changes now, not later. Let's pivot our discussions toward these community-driven success stories. What strategies have worked in your area? How can we scale these initiatives to have even broader impacts?

Mott MacDonald’s Carbon Crunch events always present a great opportunity to hear and discuss industry-leading responses to climate change with our outstanding partners and clients. Next week, our UK Carbon Crunch will focus on what it means to think beyond #NetZero, so that action on #ClimateChange achieves the most significant benefits possible for people and the #environment we all share.  This year, we’ll be hosting our UK event in #Manchester for the first time. I'm looking forward to hearing from Greater Manchester’s Mayor, Andy Burnham on how delivering decarbonisation and can create widespread opportunities for the region. It'll also be great to host some sessions with representatives from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, National Highways, the Environment Agency and Anglian Water. As I wrote about with Julia Baker earlier this year (https://lnkd.in/eZFgeaAp) connected thinking on co-benefits is key. Improving the environment by achieving biodiversity net gain requirements can also enable carbon sequestration and achieve better social outcomes. There is inherent alignment. In the coming months, we’re holding Carbon Crunches in more countries across the world than ever before, including the #UAE, #NewZealand and #Australia. While the needs of every community and place are different, Carbon Crunch is all about the shared need to listen to challenges and respond with integrated excellence.

On Tuesday, December 19, Brantford City Council received a report highlighting the significant strides made in climate action in 2023, both on a corporate level and as a community. This year, the City of Brantford implemented several action items from the Corporate Climate Change Action Plan, including: - Converting a total of 1,092 streetlights in Brantford to energy-efficient LED lights. - Implementing an anti-idling guideline that limits City vehicles from idling to a certain length of time to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. - Launching the Green Bin program which diverts organic waste from the Mohawk Street landfill, lowers greenhouse gas emissions, and contributes to a more sustainable future. - Introducing an updated City Tree Protection By-law which governs the planting, maintenance, and safeguarding of trees situated on City-owned and managed properties. - Purchasing four electric vehicles.
