Airport Capacity and Passenger Figures Growth - what to consider before the extension and new Master Plan? in 2015 there were 10.8 million passengers at Lotnisko Chopina (Chopin Airport) (Warsaw, Poland) whereas in 2019 this figure reached 18.86 million. Tremendous growth requiring multi-level planning and performance but also some observations worth sharing with those planning the expansions of their airports. First one is obvious but often omitted: airports are not the same and the number of passengers is not the only measurement or target. It is crucial to observe airports as they operate in changing and dynamic environment made of rapid technology and environmental changes as well as geopolitical challenges. So one should not look at the airport as stand-alone self-sufficient factor but as an element of transportation system instead which should be best analyzed and matched with the country's potential maximizing its role in the region and the world. Not only existent but best planned multi-modal transport system should be considered first, including road, rail and sea wherever applicable - not only within the country but within the region considering major world trends and routes. Other aspects of the country's strategy should be matched, including foreign policy, fiscal / investment / business development, legislation, etc. All above should result in existing and future stimulated demand analysis and forecast, concluding on the most efficient airports system in the country based on air traffic structure, efficiently co-existing with road and rail network. Hence the answer to the first question: what sort of airport is a given one to become and hosting what traffic? A hub, traditional (legacy carriers), charter or low cost only? That would determine the operational parameters of the airport to be considered in the development plans. Planning for passenger figures includes segmentation and distribution of fleet operations and passenger movements (seasonality, but also throughput per hour) and environmental limits. Allow for undisturbed gradual airport extension in the future, planning and designing it upfront. Allow for required land and building restrictions around the airport to avoid severe environmental and infrastructural restrictions and limiters in the future. Follow and shape, wherever possible, trends in legislation or local infrastructure development plans. There may be a point beyond which the airport will not be able to meet growing demand due to its terminal limitations - think ahead and adjust your strategy accordingly. Also, such a big increase in operations / passenger figures (the higher the number the most important and difficult this factor becomes) is reaching operational excellence (especially with existing capacity limits) and performance improvement. This may be particularly critical for state owned enterprises requiring deep business transformation and change management first based on mentality change.

As a frequent traveler, I usually start my journeys from Birmingham Airport, given its convenient proximity to my home, just 25 minutes away. This accessibility has often tipped the scales in its favor, despite not always offering the best flight connections. However, my recent experience at Birmingham Airport served as a stark reminder of the challenges that arise amidst change and growth. The airport is currently undergoing construction to enhance its security facilities. Unfortunately, this necessary upgrade resulted in an unprecedented 2.5-hour wait to clear security, with queues stretching from one end of the terminal to the other. It's easy to imagine how this delay could have been significantly longer had I been traveling with checked luggage. Reflecting on this experience, I can't help but draw parallels to the Automotive Industry. Just like the airport's efforts to improve, the automotive software sector is constantly evolving, aiming for greater safety, efficiency, and innovation. Yet, without strategic planning and effective management, these initiatives can lead to bottlenecks and inefficiencies that impact productivity and satisfaction. This recent experience underscores the importance of foresight and adaptability, both in air travel and software development. It's a reminder that while striving for improvement is essential, maintaining operational efficiency and managing transitions smoothly are equally critical to ensure success and maintain trust among users and stakeholders. As we navigate these challenges, let's share insights and strategies for overcoming obstacles and enhancing efficiency within our industries. Your thoughts and experiences are invaluable as we collectively aim for a seamless journey, whether it's through the terminals of an airport or the lifecycle of software development. #automotive #changemanagement #leadership #management
