The importance of post-interview "thank you" notes should not be underestimated. If/when you interview, please send a “Thank You” email after (within 1 business day).  It doesn’t have to be a dissertation.  A nice “I enjoyed our chat and am interested in the role” will suffice. Adding anecdotes about why you’re a fit or something interesting you learned won’t hurt either.  I’ve had hiring managers who flat out reject people who won’t send these.  I’ve had hiring managers change their mind on who is moving forward based on these.  If you don’t have the person’s email - ask for it from whoever scheduled the meeting.  If they won’t give it to you (that’s weird, but whatever), send them the thank you email to forward.

The 2023-2024 ERAS season is officially underway! How are you planning to approach the post-interview communication? Dr. Quinton Nannet shares his thoughts on the post-interview thank you letter. Though thank you letters are considered an appropriate post-interview communication style, they are no longer necessary. If you’re the type of person that sends out thank you letters, then you should be true to yourself and go for it. Do NOT promote your application or yourself. The purpose of the letter would be to simply thank your interviewers for their time. If the program you interviewed with explicitly stated NOT to send any post-interview communication, then avoid the thank you letter entirely. 💡 BONUS TIP: Ask people the year above you, that applied to the same specialty, how they approached the situation. Your introduction is your first opportunity to make a memorable impression on the interviewer, showcasing your enthusiasm, professionalism, and suitability for the role. Even if nerves get the better of you or you feel out of your depth later in the meeting - your strong opening statement will gain you a lot of points. 🚨 Conversely, a waffly, expansive and lacklustre opening will have the reverse affect. 💡 Top Tip 1: Whatever you do, don’t infer, let alone say ‘A headhunter approached me about the role and it sounded interesting, so I wanted to find out more.’ YOU MAY AS WELL LEAVE THE ROOM AT THIS POINT. As soon as you’ve considered an opportunity and given permission for a recruiter, say, to put you forward - it’s YOUR decision to be there. You need to OWN IT and you need to say why. When crafting your opening statement, authenticity is key. 👉 HERE’S HOW: 1️⃣ Start by saying why you love what you do* 2️⃣ Go on to say that you enjoy particular sides of the work and want to do more of them 3️⃣ Explain (briefly) why this is not possible in your current firm 4️⃣ State that from your research, this opportunity looks like it would give you a chance to achieve that 5️⃣ Say something factual and positive about the firm to cement this * surprisingly few interviewees do this 💪 This way, you are showing that you are in control - not just unhappy and interviewing until you find the right thing. It will show that you KNOW what you’re looking for and WHY! 💡 Top Tip 2: Write down your statement and practice it (don't let the interview be the first time you've heard yourself saying this).
