Chile is addressing climate change and water conflicts by investing in desalination and, crucially, collaborating with local communities. This is especially important for regions like the Central Region, which has faced a "mega drought" since 2010. While desalination is considered the best solution in response to the growing water scarcity problem, there are concerns about its application and environmental impact. That’s why community involvement needs to be at the heart of any desalination strategy. Local communities should be engaged in the design and monitoring of desalination plants, ensuring their concerns are addressed. This collaboration helps balance water needs with environmental protection. Read more about both the concerns and solutions for a desalination process, including a shining best practice example featuring the partnership between Aguas Pacífico and the Bahía Narau Fishermen's Federation: https://lnkd.in/exmeNM8q #MakingSustainabilityHappen #Desalination #WaterManagement #ClimateAction #CommunityEngagement #Chile

Can small community actions hold the key to solving Venezuela's massive pollution crisis? Daniel Abate Garay explores how grassroots initiatives funded by the UN-backed Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Program are driving meaningful environmental change in Venezuela and neighboring countries. From solar energy projects empowering rural Indigenous communities to ecological restoration improving water security and waste management innovations protecting marine ecosystems, these examples highlight the power of local solutions in addressing global challenges. Scaling and replicating these efforts could pave the way for a cleaner, healthier future for Venezuela and beyond. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗢𝗣𝟮𝟵 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝘀 𝗮 𝗽𝗶𝘃𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀. The complex challenges we face call for fresh perspectives and innovative approaches. Climate change significantly threatens freshwater resources, exacerbating pollution and ecosystem degradation. In 2022, UN-Water reported that only ‘19% of the world’s renewable water resources are being withdrawn, after taking into account environmental flow requirements.’ While water conservation efforts are often voluntary and focus on stewardship, there are few, if any, institutionalised mechanisms for broader accountability. Some issues that require a critical re-examination to transform our water systems include: 🔹 the global overreliance on market mechanisms to manage and rescue our water cycle. 🔹 the inequalities that arise from unequal access to water resources and unchecked pollution. 🔹 the general neglect of conservation efforts, which are often voluntary and poorly regulated. Without being alarmist, this report should be taken seriously. About time we pay even greater attention to water resilience as we do with energy resilience. “Almost two-thirds of Europe’s surface water, such as lakes and rivers, were not in a good ecological state, the agency said, with countries including Sweden, Germany and Poland among the worst affected.” #waterresilience #environment #watertechnologies #urbansolutions

Reflecting on Australia's Murray-Darling Basin crisis reveals critical lessons for water-scarce regions worldwide. It's a cautionary tale of how unchecked water commodification has disproportionately impacted smaller farmers, local communities, and Indigenous groups. Key factors impacting water scarcity include: ✅ Powerful interests diverting water ✅ Uncontrolled extraction harming farmers, wildlife, communities ✅ Indigenous communities marginalized despite water rights ✅ Lack of oversight, leading to speculative water trading This crisis underscores the urgent need for sustainable water management policies that balance economic interests with environmental stewardship. Water, the very essence of life, is facing unprecedented challenges on a global scale. The concept of water security goes beyond mere access – it encompasses the sustainable management and equitable distribution of this precious resource. This challenge cannot be tackled by nations acting in isolation. Water security is, by its very nature, a global issue. Rivers, aquifers, and watersheds often transcend political boundaries, creating transboundary water issues that require international cooperation. Imagine a river flowing through several countries. Upstream practices in one nation can significantly impact downstream communities in another. The responsibility for ensuring sustainable water management falls on all nations sharing these resources. Hence, cooperative strategies are essential to navigate these complexities. International agreements, knowledge sharing, and joint infrastructure projects can foster a collaborative approach to water security. Here's why a shared responsibility is crucial: All people deserve access to clean, safe water for drinking, sanitation, and hygiene. Global cooperation is vital to ensure water-scarce regions have access to the resources they need. Competition over water resources can escalate tensions between nations. Collaborative management can prevent conflict and promote peaceful coexistence. Unsustainable water practices have a detrimental impact on ecosystems and biodiversity. International cooperation is key to managing water pollution and protecting aquatic resources. The International Desalination and Reuse Association, champions the cause of global water cooperation through technical solutions advocacy. The upcoming IDRA World Congress in December 2024 will bring together experts from around the world to discuss the latest trends, challenges, and opportunities in this field. #WaterSecurity #GlobalCooperation #SharedResponsibility #IDRA #SustainableWaterManagement #TransboundaryWater #EquitableAccess #ConflictPrevention #EnvironmentalSustainability Source: https://lnkd.in/eikcmNQf, https://lnkd.in/g_FpU9S, https://lnkd.in/eQFmNPfy

Great new report from European Environment Agency led by Trine Christiansen on #StateOfWater Key messages: Europe's water is under significant pressure, presenting serious challenges to water security, now and in the future. As such, Europe urgently needs to improve its resilience and ensure sustainable freshwater supplies for people and the environment. Water stress is already occurring in Europe. It affects 20% of Europe's territory and 30% of the population every year The deadline set by the Water Framework Directive (WFD) for European rivers, lakes, transitional, coastal and groundwaters to meet good status was 2015. That was not met and there has been little improvement since 2010. In 2021, only 37% of Europe's surface water bodies achieved a good or high ecological status. 29% achieved a good chemical status. The majority of protected aquatic habitats and species in the EU are assessed as having a poor or bad conservation status. #ProtectOurWater #RestoreNature #Water #WaterResilience https://lnkd.in/eQtACMtW
