Excited to share the article below, for which I’m a co-author, together with María Teresa Campos, Adrien Moucquot, David Dellamonica and Heather Moses     Based on research conducted with 24 hospitals across Europe and Canada, as part of our MDT Aid Program (MAP), this article sets out the key areas in which process variation is seen in Multi-Disciplinary Teams (MDTs) working in cancer, as well as a framework and approach to address and reduce this variability.    I’m really pleased that AstraZeneca is supporting this work. Effective MDTs can make a critical difference in determining the right treatment approach for a person with cancer. Any variability in this effectiveness can have a knock-on impact on patient outcomes, and so it’s only right that we do what we can to support improvements across the board.  Many thanks to the MDTs and hospitals who contributed to the research. I am often asked about the value of real-world evidence (RWE) 📊. In 2019, my partner was diagnosed with colon cancer 🩻 and I became a caregiver. The irony of a loved one being diagnosed with the very tumor I have spent my career treating was profound. Suddenly, I was no longer just the oncologist prescribing anti-emetics 💊, but the caregiver witnessing how even mild nausea can be debilitating 😢. The decision between 3 versus 6 months of chemotherapy became a potentially life-altering choice 🤔. More treatment meant more potency but also more toxicities; less treatment meant better tolerability but possibly less effectiveness. In our latest RWE study 🔬, Samnani et al. tackled this pragmatic clinical question. We found that shorter durations of adjuvant chemotherapy 💉 in a real-world population of patients with low-risk stage 3 colon cancer have been widely adopted in routine practice, with no significant detriment on survival 👍🏼 — confirming earlier results from the IDEA collaboration with highly selected clinical trial participants 🩺. This is the power of RWE 💪🏼. It demonstrates that less can be more. It addresses challenging clinical scenarios. It includes everyone. It matters to patients and caregivers. A Year of Journal Articles (343/365): Lyleroehr, M.J., Webster, K.A., Perry, L.M. et al. A mixed methods evaluation of patient perspectives on the implementation of an electronic health record-integrated patient-reported symptom and needs monitoring program in cancer care. J Patient Rep Outcomes 8, 66 (2024). https://lnkd.in/eTHAq5-J Summary: The study investigated the implementation of an electronic health record-integrated patient-reported symptom and needs monitoring program (cPRO) in a healthcare system's cancer care routine. The researchers used a mixed methods approach to gather feedback from patients about their experiences with cPRO. Patient perspectives on cPRO: Positive aspects: Patients found cPRO valuable for treatment monitoring, communication with care team, self-reflection on symptoms, and improved visit efficiency. They reported cPRO to be easy to use and navigate. Negative aspects: Patients were confused about the purpose of cPRO and how responses are used. They desired more education and communication from the care team about cPRO. Additionally, some patients found cPRO repetitive and felt a lack of acknowledgement from their doctors regarding their cPRO responses. Based on the findings, the researchers made the following improvements to cPRO implementation: Shortened the cPRO assessment to reduce completion time. Clarified response instructions within the assessment. Added a mechanism to inform patients if their clinicians reviewed their cPRO results. Overall, the study highlights the importance of patient education and communication for successful implementation of patient-reported outcome programs like cPRO.

In this interview, Alex Spira, MD, PhD, FACP, FASCO, discussed post-progression results from the phase 3 MARIPOSA-2 trial, which showed that amivantamab plus chemotherapy prolonged time to treatment discontinuation and time to subsequent therapy in patients with EGFR-mutated NSCLC. "We believe this will present a new standard after disease progression on osimertinib," said Dr Spira. An example of what it takes to leverage AI.. its not a quick fix but takes intense effort and time to bring it to the point where it is beneficial in a consistent way. Of course, the process will only get quicker and better but there is no quick fix... we cannot just code our way to success or throw tons of data at it and expect quality results. Simply ensuring quality learning data can be a daunting task but it cannot be sidesteeped.
