It's International Women's Day, so we're handing over our social feed today to Jennie Chapman, our Chief People Officer. Here's what she had to say: "This year's theme of #InspireInclusion is one that sits close to my heart – and is central to the kind of workplace we aspire to create at EDF Renewables UK & Ireland. Our mission as a business is to create a net zero future where clean, green energy powers all our lives. It's a huge ambition that requires new ways of thinking. Bold approaches to tackling problems. And rethinking everything we do. Because the old ways aren't going to get us to our net zero ambitions anywhere near as quickly as we need them to. This is why diversity and inclusion are so important to the renewables sector. We need diversity of thought, inclusive behaviours and a willingness to challenge stereotypes and breakdown barriers. We need to #InspireInclusion". #AcceleratingNetZero #D&I #LetsDoGoodTogether

Deetken Impact Sustainable Energy (DISE) investee SOLÉCO ENERGY is an innovative, woman-led business driving an equitable renewable energy transition in the Caribbean by fostering women’s employment, leadership, and inclusion across the value chain of solar PV distributed generation projects. Driven by an innovative investment contract with IDB Invest featuring ambitious interest rate-linked gender milestones, and supported by the Scaling Up Renewable Energy Program in Low Income Countries (SREP) administered by the IDB Lab, the DISE team provided hands-on technical assistance over the course of a year to directly support the team in achieving those gender milestones and enhance gender business practices in current and future projects. Soléco Energy provides the sector with an example of how to directly advance gender equity not only within its own company and owners but also with contractors, local communities of influence, and the sector at large. OakTree Power celebrates the women who ignite inspiration, leadership, and collaboration in an innovation-driven energy landscape. We conclude our celebration of International Women's Day in this series that recognises the women in our team who seek brighter horizons. Chantel Scheepers shares how she LEADS TOWARDS BRIGHTER HORIZONS in the energy sector as OakTree Power's Chief Executive Officer. 🌱 As the CEO, how do you lead OakTree Power in its distinctive contribution to the energy transition within the scope of your role? ☀ I bring forward solutions which positively impact the entire energy value chain. To put it plainly, our efforts result in lower wholesale costs for all electricity users while systematically decreasing distribution and network expenses. Collaborating closely with our clients, we make incremental progress, shifting the paradigm one kilowatt at a time. 🌱 How do you empower and support other women within your organisation to strive for brighter horizons in their careers? ☀ As someone who forged her own path in the energy industry and has seen the statistics of women working in the sector, I aim to be the voice for my peers and employ people who are positive change-makers with the passion and drive to make a difference. 🌱 How do you cultivate diversity and inclusion within both the company and the broader energy sector? ☀ I take pride in the fact that my team comprises individuals from 12 different nationalities, speaking 21 languages from across the globe which fulfills the need for diverse perspectives and experiences to address the outdated energy system in need of transformation. Together, we collaborate and innovate, actively supporting the energy transition across all required levels. #InternationalWomensDay #WomenForBrighterHorizons #WomenInEnergy #OakTreePower

This case study is an excellent example of real change that occurs when investors and entrepreneurs are aligned and committed to advancing gender equality. Together with Soléco Energy and the support of IDB Invest, IDB Lab, Keidos, and Nuance Security & Solar Systems Limited, we: - Trained 19 women in Jamaica on solar panel assembly and installation - Developed a sexual harassment policy tailored to the renewable energy sector and applicable to contractors to elevate the issue across the value chain, including via a clause in the EPC contract requiring explicit compliance to the policy - Developed a community engagement strategy and action plan to directly advance foster women’s employment, leadership, and inclusion in the region This sector has a long way to go. Women comprise a mere one third of the renewable energy workforce worldwide (primarily in administrative roles), hold less than 11% of leadership roles, and represent less than 4% of CEOs. These figures are alarming considering the clear benefits that women's inclusion and empowerment bring for the bottom line. This project provides an example of how we can all tackle this sector-wide phenomenon with concrete initiatives!

As we close out #WomensHistoryMonth we want to spotlight our program, "Women for Green Jobs" with Shortlist Futures, The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) and Value For Women Ltd.🔋🌍💡 W4GJ helps women access and succeed in #cleanenergy careers in Africa, specifically targeting job placements, career support and employer-level interventions across the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Uganda. This program works with over forty clean energy companies, including Husk Power Systems, Nuru, Sistema.bio / Sistema Biobolsa and Sun King, to support their growth by addressing equitable hiring challenges. As part of W4GJ, we have also published two reports on women in the clean energy sector: 1️⃣“Bottlenecks and Breakthroughs: Advancing Gender Equity in African Clean Energy” investigates the talent pipeline and recruitment barriers for women entering clean energy jobs 2️⃣”Empowering Women in Clean Energy: Advancing and Retaining an Equitable Workforce” addresses workplace challenges that limit women’s advancement and retention once they have entered the sector 📖Links to both reports are in the comments below ⬇️
The response to climate change can unlock opportunity for billions of people - making them safer, healthier, better nourished, empowered, and free. We must include the most vulnerable people - often women – in energy transitions that will help us transition away from fossil fuels and set a path for human progress and development. Today, women make up only 32% of the #renewableenergy workforce. A new report from The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) offers the energy sector's first pay equity analysis and identifies ways to improve women's opportunities and success within the industry.
