From today, the UK's Biodiversity Net Gain requirement will come into effect, introduced as part of the Environment Act (2021), the #BNG requirement is a standardised approach to development, land and marine management that leaves biodiversity in a 'measurably better state than before the development took place.' The BNG requirement provides an important opportunity for renewable energy companies to build on their existing commitments to sustainable land use, and improve the local environment around new infrastructure projects. The implementation of mandatory BNG presents a chance for businesses and finance to play a pivotal role in promoting positive change for the health and resilience of nature. Ecological monitoring reveals rising plant and bird species diversity at a 138 MW nature-friendly solar park in Hungary during its first year of operation. 🌱 A biodiversity survey has recorded an increase in plant and bird species during the first operational year of a solar installation that was specifically designed to be nature-friendly. SolServices Kft. operates the 138 MW Lumen Park Szolnok in central Hungary. The project was built according to guidelines for the development of ecologically conscious solar arrays outlined in a 2023 white paper by SolServices. Ecological experts assessed the area's wildlife before construction. The monitoring results from the first year of the three-year study period, released by SolServices and shared with pv magazine, show an increase in species diversity, with positive changes observed in the number of nesting and area-using species. Great to see another #biodiversity for #solar parks guide being published. The new theme is clearly on #conservoltaics. This time from Australia again. Good to see that some regions downunder, have made #biodiversityimpactassessment mandatory. For example in NSW, developers must assess the impacts by using a standard method to assign a score to the condition of the biodiversity before the project starts and after it is completed (Biodiversity Assessment Method - BAM). The assumption is that after development, the score will be zero. Whenever solar projects are being discussed, there is always a mention of #biodiversity net gain but what does it actually mean?   Biodiversity net gain is about creating a strategy for maintaining and bettering the wildlife and nature on land that is being developed and ensuring that it is left improved when the land is returned to its original use.   When a renewable energy project is installed, we put measures in place to ensure the wellbeing of the wildlife on the land and to boost the natural environment that surrounds the development. Some of our biodiversity enhancements are: ·      planting new trees and hedgerows, ·      creating wildflower meadows, ·      installing bat and bird boxes. It is so important to us that all our projects ultimately benefit the ecosystems they’re placed in. Once the projects are operational, our Land Management team continues to visit and inspect the site, making sure that all the measures we’ve put in place are working. So, not only do solar farms help create clean energy, but they also help with conserving wildlife and improving biodiversity around the area! #biodiversitynetgain #solarenergy #renewableenergy
