The current trajectory indicates a promising future, driven by a confluence of factors that positions Portugal as a key player in the global transition to sustainable energy. Firstly, Portugal's commitment to renewable energy is underscored by ambitious targets outlined in its National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP). With an aim to achieve 47% renewable energy penetration by 2030, the government has set a clear roadmap for the integration of solar power into its energy mix. This commitment provides a stable regulatory environment, fostering investor confidence and attracting both domestic and international capital to the burgeoning solar sector. "In #PV the ambition jumps from 9 GW to 20.4 GW of total installed capacity for 2030, more than doubling the previous target. With such a deployment, Portugal would be able to cross 2,000 W/capita by 2030, one of the highest scores of all EU Member States." 🌞 Just returned from the inspiring Large Scale Solar EU event in Lisbon organized by Solar Media. It was invigorating to engage in discussions with industry leaders shaping Europe's renewable energy landscape. I had the privilege of being on a panel alongside esteemed colleagues Cécile Luciano, Jose Pascoal and Vincent Mathely, where we delved into repowering, recycling and revamping of solar plants. Key insights from the conference and the panel I attended: 1)     Europe is at the forefront of renewables investments, paving the way for a sustainable future. 2)     Portugal and Spain exemplify remarkable progress, with 80% renewable energy integration already achieved this year, showcasing the feasibility of clean energy transitions. 3)     Grid infrastructure remains a critical hurdle for renewables scaling; thus, storage solutions are pivotal for future energy systems. 4)     Solar power price cannibalisation is no longer an academic concern, project owners are already seeing this and consider the appropriate strategies. 5)     BESS is key of the future energy system. But declining revenue streams for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) underscore the urgency for supportive mechanisms to facilitate their scalability. 6)     Optimism prevails regarding anticipated interest rate reductions by year-end, underscoring the importance of patience. 7)     Embracing repowering strategies is imperative for companies, ensuring continual project optimization. I liked the comment from my panel that repowering is a philosophy how assets are managed. 8)     Commitment to net zero must drive procurement decisions, with sustainability factors weighing as heavily as financial considerations for investors. 9)     Bonds are again used as a financing mechanism for new projects. 10)  Investors are investing in a diversified portfolios including diversified stages of project life. Thrilled to return to the UK and Thrive Renewables armed with new energy and food for thought. Beyond the enriching discussions, Lisbon charmed with its rich history, amazing food, and warm and happy people. ⚡️ The iliad Group announces its signature of three power purchase agreements (#PPAs) in France, Italy and Poland with ENGIE and Statkraft. Representing total energy capacity of 89.5 MW, these three PPAs mark a key milestone in implementing our #Climate Plan. 🇪🇺 Under these new PPAs, the iliad Group has undertaken to purchase the electricity generated by solar farms located in Sainte-Gemme in #France, Latina in #Italy, and Resko in #Poland, for the 10 to 15 years as from when they come into service in 2025.   👉 Including our first PPA in France announced in January 2023, this brings the total renewable electricity production capacity developed thanks to the Group to almost 140 GWh, i.e., approximately the equivalent of the annual domestic consumption of a city like Quimper in 🇫🇷, Padua in 🇮🇹 or Częstochowa in 🇵🇱.   ✅ It also corresponds to the electricity consumed by 5 million of our subscribers in Europe through their use of our network infrastructure. Consequently, the proportion of the iliad Group’s direct electricity consumption covered by renewable energy supplied under PPAs will amount to 13% in 2025.   🌳 Because solar farms can have a significant impact on their surrounding landscapes and communities, the iliad Group is very rigorous when selecting its projects. As a result, the three new solar farms all carry the internationally recognized EKOenergy label. And each of the projects is expected to yield additional benefits, including in terms of preserving biodiversity and positively impacting the local economy.   ✍ And we don’t intend to stop there: we’ve pledged that by 2035 at last 50% of our electricity consumption in Poland and Italy – the countries that have the highest-carbon energy mix out of our three geographies – and 20% in France will be covered by PPAs. Spanish PV group Sivortex is set to revolutionize the renewable energy landscape with their ambitious Actuel Solar project in Teruel, Spain. This innovative initiative will combine 100 MW of photovoltaic generation with 200 MWh of liquid CO2 storage, offering a cutting-edge energy stability and sustainability solution. Key Highlights: 🔸 Innovative Energy Storage: The project will replace conventional batteries with an industrial system that stores excess solar generation through the thermodynamic transformation of CO2. This system efficiently converts gas to liquid for storage and then back to gas to generate electricity at night. 🔸Massive Investment: Sivortex plans to invest €120 million to build this groundbreaking plant, which will occupy 274 hectares in the La Paz business park. 🔸Shared Self-Consumption: The project aims to provide stable, low-cost energy to local companies, boasting the largest PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) in the European Union. 🔸Local Engagement: Since the project's announcement, there has been a surge of interest from local companies wanting to invest and participate, highlighting strong community and industry support. Inauguration of Fairfield Solar Plant: A Transformative Leap Towards Sustainable Energy Future in The Bahamas Today marks the inauguration of the Fairfield Solar Plant, one of the two solar facilities developed by Lucayas Solar Power Ltd. in Grand Bahama. This milestone signifies the advent of renewable energy in The Bahamas, propelled by a power purchase agreement (PPA) framework financed by IDB Invest. Expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions, the Fairfield Solar Plant is projected to cut over 5,000 tons of CO2 annually and nearly 150,000 tons over the 25-year lifespan of the PPA.
