Weighing up the 'Cost’ of CCS in Emission Reduction: ⚙️ High-demand and high-emitting industries like cement, steel, and chemicals contribute roughly 20% of direct global CO2 emissions. The International Energy Agency (IEA) underscores that innovations in carbon capture utilisation and storage and hydrogen are important for significant emission reductions in heavy these industries. 🌐 In fossil fuel-dependent regions, CCS offers the potential to mitigate emissions. Recent Global CCS Institute findings show growing global governmental support, indicating decreasing CCS costs. After reviewing the comprehensive CCS paper by the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies, here are some key insights on the current state, challenges, and future of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology: CCS is crucial for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It involves capturing CO2 from industrial and energy sources or directly from the air, transporting it, and securely storing it underground. Key methods include Direct Air Capture (DAC), On-site Capture, Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR), and storage in geological formations like salt caves. Global CCS capacity is rising. The US has increased its 45Q tax credit to $85/tonne for point-source capture and $180/tonne for DAC and dedicated storage, significantly boosting project incentives. Projects like Longship in Norway are setting new benchmarks, demonstrating the potential of comprehensive CCS networks to capture and store millions of tonnes of CO2 annually. Future projections indicate substantial growth. Saudi Arabia plans to develop a CCS hub with a capacity of 9 million tonnes of CO2 annually by 2027, scaling up to 44 million tonnes annually by 2035. However, CCS faces several challenges: - High costs for capturing, transporting, and storing CO2, with current market mechanisms often not covering these expenses. - Concerns about potential CO2 leakage and the perpetuation of fossil fuel dependence. - Establishing supportive legal and regulatory frameworks is crucial but often complex and slow-moving. Different business models include: - Full Chain Models: Projects developed, owned, and operated by a single entity, prevalent in early-stage projects due to reduced coordination risks. - Partial Chain Models: Projects focus on capture, transport, and/or storage, linked to shared infrastructure within CCS hubs, allowing collaboration among different market players to reduce risks and costs. Projects can be owned by government entities, private entities, or through public-private partnerships, leveraging government funding, market-based incentives, and carbon pricing to drive development. Innovative partnerships are crucial. For example, Carbfix and Climeworks are setting new standards with their plant capable of capturing 36,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, a remarkable advancement. Last week was one of the significant weeks for a #EUClimatePolicy, where the #EU and #Germany have both made crucial strides in their efforts to combat #climatechange. The #EU has adopted new regulations to overhaul the gas and hydrogen markets, while Germany has approved a contentious #CO2storage law and a draft law to accelerate #H2 projects. These announcements mark important steps in Europe’s transition towards a more #sustainable #lowcarbon #green future.                                                                 The #EUCouncil adopted new regulations and directives to revamp the internal market rules for #renewables, #naturalgases and #hydrogen as part of the #FitFor55. This legislative package aims to facilitate the transition to #renewable and #low-carbon gases, particularly #H2, to meet the EU's #decarbonization goals by 2050. Key provisions include the establishment of a robust framework for the natural gas and H2 markets, integrated and transparent network planning, and the promotion of renewable and low-carbon gases. To ensure a #justtransition, member states will provide tariff discounts and incentives to support market integration, especially in regions heavily dependent on coal and other carbon-intensive industries. Additionally, the package introduces measures to protect vulnerable customers from energy poverty by ensuring continuity of supply and protection from disconnections. This comprehensive approach underscores the EU’s commitment to achieving a #GreenerEnergyFuture.   Meanwhile, the German government did a huge step towards #CO2storage that can support industries like cement, steel, and chemicals to reduce emissions. #CCS will be primarily utilized in the North Sea, with restrictions on its use by coal-fired power plants. Despite concerns over safety and cost, the Minister Robert Habeck emphasized that #CCS is crucial for Germany to meet its #climate-neutral target by 2045. Concurrently, the government has passed legislation to accelerate H2 projects, recognizing its pivotal role in the #EnergyTransition. This includes streamlined planning and approval processes, positioning H2 as essential for sectors where direct electrification is impractical. Achieving the global energy transition in support of net-zero goals would be greatly supported by cross-sector collaboration and carbon pricing policy frameworks, Dr. Malek Al-Chalabi, Senior Advisor, Carbon Pricing Policy, Shell, said in an ADIPEC Spotlight Interview. “At Shell, we believe that in order to achieve net-zero emissions, we need unprecedented collaboration across governments, industry, and society. 🌍 Today, May 27th, the Council adopted the Net Zero Industry Act, aiming to increase the EU’s manufacturing capacity of technologies such as CCS that support industrial decarbonisation in Europe. With the Council’s vote today, the Act has now been formally adopted and will enter into force in the coming weeks. We welcome the adoption of the Regulation as it: 🔺is a crucial step towards solving a key bottleneck: the current lack of available CO₂ storage sites; 🔺assigns responsibility to oil and gas producers responsible for developing CO2 storage, forcing them to act; 🔺instils market confidence in other key players along the value chain reducing associated risks and increasing willingness to invest in deploying CCS; 🔺prevents CO2 storage from becoming centralised in the North Sea, fostering industrial decarbonisation in Southern and Central-Eastern Europe.
