Planet has secured a $230 million contract with an undisclosed Asia-Pacific company to expand its Pelican satellite constellation, its largest deal to date, according to CNBC. The multi-year contract funds the construction and operation of satellites, giving the customer exclusive regional access while allowing Planet to license data elsewhere. “It is a momentum-building event. … It’s both our biggest deal ever and it’s a significant step for us into this satellite services business,” Planet CEO Will Marshall told CNBC. Planet expects the deal to boost revenue starting in fiscal 2026, with payments spread over seven years, as it accelerates the deployment of up to 32 next-generation Pelican satellites. https://hubs.la/Q034HGy00 #SatelliteInnovation #SpaceTech #EarthObservation

This month marks the fifth anniversary of our deal with Kacific Broadband Satellites Group, in partnership with Asian Development Bank (ADB), which enabled a groundbreaking project to provide affordable, high-speed broadband in Asia and the Pacific Islands region. GuarantCo provided a $50 million partial credit guarantee to a private sector European institutional investor to support Kacific in building, owning and operating its first shared geostationary earth orbit, high-throughput satellite. The satellite was launched by SpaceX in December 2019 and became operational in early 2020. The project aimed to help the circa two billion people in rural, mountainous areas of Asia and small island nations in the region without broadband access or internet connections because of the high cost and the lack of existing infrastructure due to geographical challenges. Low-cost, high-speed broadband connections will encourage economic growth in some of the lowest-income countries in the world. https://lnkd.in/eA47sJjp The Private Infrastructure Development Group #impactinvestment #EconomicEquality #connectivity #GlobalGoals

Chinese state-backed company, #Spacesail, is preparing to launch a satellite service in Brazil. This announcement aligns with Chinese President Xi Jinping‘s visit to Brazil, where he signed an upgraded partnership with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Thursday. Spacesail, which specializes in high-speed internet services through low Earth orbit satellites, has teamed up with Brazilian state-owned Telebrás to offer satellite communications and broadband Internet services. The companies plan to evaluate demand in regions lacking fiber optic infrastructure, with the service expected to launch by 2026, according to a spokesperson from Brazil’s communications ministry. #ExtremaRatio #China #Brazil

Being in the heart of European 🇪🇺 Satellite 🛰 communication! That is how I 100% feel by being in 🇧🇪 and close to Luxemburg 🇱🇺 and European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk, Netherlands 🇳🇱 . News of the day is "Satellite group SES to acquire Intelsat in $3.1bn deal". The whole #Satellite market is feeling the heat from Startlink by SpaceX and Project Kuiper by Amazon. LEO is bringing massive democratization opportunities for satellite connectivity services, and it naturally applies pressure to well-established business models by satellite operators. An interesting fact is that the combined company will be the largest #Satellite communication provider in terms of annual revenues of €3.8bn. 💶 Even more eye-catching are expected financial efficiencies worth €2.4bn, about 85% of the transaction’s value. Truly shows the capital intensity that is applied to the satellite communication market and the cost to produce, launch, and operate those satellites in Space.

With a new Presidential administration up and running, it is time for the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) to rethink how to achieve success with the BEAD program. My report today for the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation discusses the need to better incorporate "alternative" technologies like fixed-wireless and low-earth orbit satellites to help save money on deployment. States should not be preferencing fiber projects when the use of an "alternative" technology could connect Americans at a fraction of the cost. Money saved on deployment would be better spent addressing more pressing causes of the digital divide, like affordability. Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/e6a5eEFm
