🔥 Hot Topic 🔥 Attracting New Talent Into Construction. Let’s look at it from another angle. Your first job in construction? And what attracted you to it? I’ll start. 👇 Fire Watch. 18 years old. Monitored welder(s) in a confined space at a large chemical processing plant. Didn’t necessarily love the fire watching part, but got a ton of time to observe the facility. Appreciated all the thinking that went into the mechanical systems, along with the hands-on aspect of the installations. Remember realizing that nothing else could happen without these systems in place. That’s when I knew I wanted to be part of this industry. There’s lots of discussion about how to attract the next generation of talent into construction. I think about this a lot. 💡 But it only recently occurred to me to consider what it was that drew me into the industry. 🤔 By sharing our stories, maybe we can re-discover and promote some of the more personal benefits of working in construction. If anything else, it’s a great way to learn a little more about each other. And I’ll bet there are some amazing stories out there. Let’s hear yours. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝘁 𝗔𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁? 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗮 𝘁𝘆𝗽𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂? I will hit the ground running at full speed. Needing to take grasp of current claims, projects, and meeting the entirety of the team and beginning relationships with them. A typical day will start early, ensuring availability when current projects begin. Creating schedules and plans to review with the CEO, to ensure I have a proper office to field balance. Collaborating with all departments of the business, and networking with our client’s safety teams. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗮 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿? As I step into the role of safety director at Ascendent, I will be responsible for creating safety policies, identifying hazards, training employees, investigating accidents and incidents, making sure rules are followed, encouraging safety through various techniques, planning for emergencies, and working with others throughout the organization to ensure health and safety principles are always improving. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻/𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻/𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆? I started construction at a young age as a laborer for a small excavation company. This was followed by moving into small commercial demolition. In June of 2010, I joined Envirocon, and was initially dispatched to a dam demolition and dredging project. This gave me experience in industrial demolition and HAZWOPER work. From there, I moved up the ranks, becoming an equipment operator, followed by crew lead and foremen, and eventually a site supervisor. I joined Envirocon’s health and safety team in 2016, and since then have worked with a few other demolition contractors in both the industrial and commercial demolition and abatement world. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗝𝗼𝗯 𝗦𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆? I chose a career in safety because of a very serious near-miss I was involved in during my career - an event that could have been prevented. I told myself I wanted to ensure nothing like this could ever happen to others as long as I had something to do about it. 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘺 𝘵𝘶𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘛𝘸𝘰!

Do you struggle with finding skilled trades workers? Here are three recent examples from one client. All examples are compared to a 20% placement. 3rd shift Production Supervisor: It took OTHR 58 hours to fill this role at a cost of $5,800. That is a $11,600 cost savings! Maintenance Supervisor: It took OTHR 72 hours to fill this role at a cost of $7,200. That is a $17,000 cost savings! Maintenance Tech: It took OTHR 55 hours to fill this at a cost of $5,500. That is a cost savings of $14,500! Overall, we saved this client $43,100 on these three roles. Skilled trades are tough, but that doesn't mean you should be paying a fortune to find the right candidate. If you need help recruiting for production, skilled trades, or engineering at your manufacturing facility, we have an entire team dedicated to this area. 

It’s no secret that any successful construction team needs a diverse range of skill sets, qualifications, and experience. Until we have super robots that are equipped with all the skilled trades experience and tools of a full team, hiring managers are left with the tedious task of filling multiple different roles. Unfortunately (or fortunately) super robots don’t exist yet, but what if you could find qualified candidates for every position you need in one place? According to BuildForce Canada, the construction industry will need to recruit more than 300,000 workers over the next decade to compensate for the rising demand and retirement rates. This statistic underscores the critical need for streamlined hiring processes and access to a pool of skilled professionals. Some forty odd years ago when I was just starting out in the Construction and Mining industries I was told a story by a Workplace Inspector that has guided my attitude to Training, Safety and incident investigation. A man was employed as an overhead crane operator at a blasting and painting works. He had attached a load to his overhead crane and proceeded to lift. Due to lack of knowledge and training he inadvertently overloaded the sling he was using and it snapped. When the crane recoiled it jumped off its rails but remained supported in the structure. The Workplace inspector was called to site to inspect the crane. He advised the owner to have the crane re-installed on its rails, conduct any necessary repairs then give him a call to come back and approve the use of the crane. Upon returning to the site the Inspector signed off on the crane for re-use and asked if he could speak to the man who was operating the crane. The owner of the business told the inspector that he had terminated the man and he no longer worked for him. The Inspector asked the owner “why did you terminate him”? The owner replied that the man had cost his business three days of production plus $26000 in repairs. The inspector responded by telling the owner he had just given the mans next employer $26000 worth of free training and experience. That operator will never make that mistake again. The next person you employ could possibly make the same mistake. It is never smart business to terminate someone for making an honest mistake. Financially or otherwise. Build on the experience, develop training and procedures from what you learn. Ask "what did we do or not do to cause this to happen?
