The Getty Foundation and the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s #AfricanAmerican #CulturalHeritage Action Fund announced "Conserving #Black #Modernism, a $3.1 million grant program to preserve historic modern architecture by #Blackarchitects and #designers". This is a 2-year program which will advance efforts to further identify historic sites that represent the achievements of #AfricanAmericanarchitects and designers, while providing key preservation #planning, #training, and #storytelling resources for long term sustainment. For more than a century, while the contributions of African American architects have helped shape the #modernarchitecture movement in the US, these achievements have been overlooked and undervalued. “We must address the invisibility of generations of Black architects whose architectural genius, #creativity, and ingenuity helped shape our national understanding of #modernism,” says Brent Leggs, executive director of the Action Fund and senior vice president of the National Trust. We applaud the efforts for leveraging #historicpreservation as a tool to increase recognition, interpretation, and protection of "the physical sites representing #Blackachievement.” Broadening awareness of and preserving Black architectural #heritage is a powerful storytelling technique which we must continue to advocate for. in case you need a quick read!
Amanda Fuson shares why she decided to pursue a career in historic preservation. "For me historic preservation is important because it connects us to our past in a very tangible way. History can be told, but to experience the buildings, craftsmanship and places of our past is how we really understand and connect with our heritage. Historic preservation also brings authenticity to a place. It’s the quirky brick pattern, the strange animal gargoyles, the paneled doors, and the way our eyes dance up decoratively detailed wall that excites us; something you notice different about a building every time you pass, that you know you can’t find anywhere else and makes you want to come back." In the world of modern architecture, the blending of traditional elements with modern design aesthetics has become a popular method of design. Take, for instance, Minsuk Cho's latest creation, the Serpentine Pavilion 2024, aptly named "Archipelagic Void". Drawing inspiration from traditional Korean architecture, Cho ingeniously integrates the concept of "madang" - small courtyards found in Korean homes - into his design philosophy. The pavilion, comprising five distinct structures or "islands" surrounding a central void, reflects Cho's deep-rooted appreciation for negative space and the interplay between connection and separation. This architectural marvel encourages visitors to explore freely, crafting their own unique narratives as they meander through its fluid spaces. Cho's work isn't an isolated example. Across South Korea, architects are embracing the principles of hanok architecture, where indoor and outdoor spaces harmonize effortlessly, framing natural landscapes and fostering a sense of connection with the environment. From Studio Gaon's House in Macheon to TRU Architects' Cherry Blossom House, these modern interpretations of hanok design showcase a delicate balance between tradition and innovation. What emerges is a narrative of architectural evolution, where the past informs the present, and tradition serves as a source of inspiration for creativity. As we witness the seamless integration of age-old principles with contemporary materials and techniques, we're reminded that great architecture moves through time, capturing the essence of culture while paving the way for the future. #MinskCho #SouthKoreanArchitecture #ArchipelagicVoid #SerpentinePavilion
Ad | Architect Minsuk Cho discusses his design for this year's Serpentine Pavilion ahead of its opening on 7 June in this exclusive video produced by Dezeen for the Serpentine. Cho is the founder and lead architect of Mass Studies, an architecture practice based in Seoul, South Korea. He is the 23rd architect to be chosen for the Serpentine commission, and the pavilion will be his first building in the UK.

Gee whizz - slipped some images by my favourite mad architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser into a presentation yesterday. Always stimulates a reaction! An Austrian artist, architect, environmentalist and social commenter / reformer, his philosophy was that straight lines are inhuman and should have no place in architecture. He was quoted as saying “The straight line leads to the downfall of humanity!”. His most famous creations are the way he beautified the waste incinerator on the Danube in Vienna and the apartment building he designed in Vienna itself. I find his work inspirational, not necessarily because I love it architecturally, but because he actually genuinely challenged convention. Unlike some modern architects who write worthy tomes saying we should challenge convention, but then accept high value commissions that eschew the principles they say are important, Hundertwasser never “sold out”. If you are ever in Vienna, he has a museum in the apartment building - so you can see it up close, and find out more about him. If you do go, make sure you go to the toilets - they are amazing! https://lnkd.in/ec8wat-y If you are interested, you can find out more about Hundertwasser, his life, art and work here: https://lnkd.in/euYzxudc Isn’t what we do endlessly fascinating? We get to make places that people live their entire lives in - I think we owe it to them to be as creative as we can to provide places where everyone can reach their absolute potential. (But I am just a Transport Planner on a bit of a mission, so what do i know!!).
