From Dr. Wendy Mahoney, interim President and CEO of the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV): "Housing is extremely limited for survivors, often forcing them to make impossible choices between sleeping outside or suffering continued violence. This is especially true for survivors of color and other marginalized survivors, who are already more likely to experience violence, compounded by systemic inequality that makes it harder to escape and access safe housing. We all deserve a safe place to live, and we can't solve homelessness by punishing people for experiencing it." Learn more about the Johnson v. Grants Pass case here: https://lnkd.in/e3U-MmiK

Veteran Housing Corp says that IF YOU ARE NOT PART OF A PERMANENT AND LASTING SOLUTION TO THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING CRISIS AND HOMELESSNESS, YOU ARE THE PROBLEM! THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX IS BROKEN AND NOT WORKING FOR AMERICAN TAXPAYERS Veteran Housing Corp would ask every TAXPAYER to demand and get answers from their elected and appointed government officials the below questions as they relate to any affordable, workforce, or supportive housing project in your community! 1. How much local, state, and federal funding, tax credits, or other government benefits or incentives did the project receive? 2. What is the affordability period for each project? Is the affordability period permanent and in perpetuity? 3. What guarantees exist have your local, state, and federal government officials obtained in writing that rents will not go up or that tenants will not be displaced or evicted after the "affordability period expires? Every local, state, and federal housing authority and affordable or workforce housing stakeholder should adopt the State of Vermont's "permanent affordability" policy as a model for all future government funded or subsidized housing projects or developments, no exceptions! https://lnkd.in/eFEUC8c8 Additionally, local, state and federal housing agencies should look to the Helsinki, FINLAND MODEL of ending homelessness by providing affordable housing for all 'It’s a miracle': Helsinki's radical solution to homelessness https://lnkd.in/er9HZSQU Even the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development AGREES THAT adopting FINLAND'S MODEL OF ERADICATING HOMELESSNESS may be of great value to resolving the affordable housing and homelessness crises in America https://lnkd.in/gkSZWYRU

Run Against Violence: A Journey of Hope and Action In 2017, Kirrily Dear ran 1,300km from Broken Hill to Sydney – 19 days, one voice for the millions affected by family violence. Family violence impacts us all, especially children. We launched this movement to give them a platform, to break the silence. Why Broken Hill to Sydney? This route symbolizes the widespread nature of the issue, connecting communities across Australia. The 1,300km distance represents the estimated 1.7 million Australians who experienced physical abuse before age 15. The 1st Virtual Challenge & Beyond: Born alongside Kirrily's run, our virtual challenge lets walkers and runners globally join the fight. Today, it's the world's largest virtual team event, uniting thousands for a common goal. Listen, Learn, Talk. End Family Violence. Our efforts are working. After the 2017 challenge, 59% of participants reported having more conversations and sharing resources about prevention. Every step, every voice counts! Run Against Violence is more than a run. We're a community building healthy, inclusive spaces free from violence. We partner with NAPCAN to empower teens with knowledge about healthy relationships through the Love Bites program. Join us! Trigger Warning: Discussion of Family Violence Last week, I attended The Today Family Violence Help Centre 2nd Annual #Illuminating #Hope #Garden #Cocktail Party in #Edmonton. The Today Centre, a critically life-saving #organization, offers free, short-term support for #adults targeted by #family #violence, regardless of situation, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, culture, or religion. Over the course of the event, I learned in detail how The Today Centre provides #immediate, #integrated, and #inclusive services to individuals #impacted by #family #violence. Hearing firsthand about #personal #experiences of family violence was profoundly sad, yet it was also a #beacon of #hope due to the #critical #life-#saving supports facilitated by The Today Family Violence Help Centre. Here are some of the key takeaways from what I learned: ➡️Family violence #does #not #discriminate based on age, income, race, or relationship status. ➡️Not all #heroes wear capes; many are workers and #volunteers at The Today Centre. ➡️Domestic violence is often #invisible, hiding behind closed doors. ➡️Hope exists thanks to the dedication of The Today Centre’s workers and #volunteers. ➡️People do care, and their #support makes a significant difference. ➡️One person can make a positive difference, and we can all be that person by #listening, #donating, #volunteering, #advocating, #learning the signs of violence, and being a #friend. 📣Call to Action: It takes just #one #person to make a #positive difference. Whether through donating, volunteering, advocating, or simply being a #supportive #friend, each of us can contribute to combating family violence and fostering hope. Join me in supporting The Today Centre and their mission to provide critical, life-saving services to those in need. Together, we can ‘illuminate hope’ and make a real difference in our community. If you are in immediate danger, please call 911. Your Support Goes a Long Way: Donate online by credit card via The Today Centre website: The Today Centre Donation Form or via the CanadaHelps online portal: CanadaHelps - The Today Family Violence Help Centre. Donate: • One-time gift • Monthly donations • Major gift • Matching gifts The Today Centre also offers #public #education #workshops for #individuals in #business, the sector, or otherwise to learn more about supporting friends and family experiencing #family #violence, how to recognize the ‘signs’ of family violence, and #maintaining #healthy #relationships. In Illinois, Black residents face a staggering disparity in #homelessness compared to their white counterparts, with nearly 8x's the likelihood of experiencing homelessness. This alarming trend isn't exclusive to Illinois; it echoes across the nation. Advocates, University of Illinois Chicago researchers, and State leaders, including Chief Homelessness Officer Christine Haley and IDHS Secretary Designate Dulce Maria Quintero, recently joined Gov. Pritzker to release the comprehensive report on Black Homelessness in Illinois. The report comes with an action plan to address the #inequities and increase pathways to #affordablehousing for all. Read it here: https://bit.ly/3ygIIs5
Christine Haley, State Homelessness Chief, Illinois Office to Prevent & End Homelessness, joined WTTW to discuss the racial disparities across Illinois’ homeless population. She was a key driving force behind a recently released study on Black Homelessness in Illinois. (link to https://lnkd.in/gvt74s-q.) Watch the interview here: https://lnkd.in/gMjENsx5
