Family Nurse Practitioner/Nurse Regulator/Leader/Educator/Researcher/Speaker
So honored for the opportunity to be among the selected inaugural Fellows of the newly established Academy of Diversity Leaders in Nursing (ADLN). I cannot wait to meet and celebrate with my colleagues but more importantly I look forward to working with this distinguished group of nurse leaders. Lord knows there’s so much work to be done. Congratulations to all!!
Having designed and delivered multiple simulation events in my career as an educator of nurse practitioners, I’ve long been beating the drum that we don’t fully deploy this modality to its fullest extent in APRN education. I’m deeply gratified to see this tide turning!
I’m especially fond of OSCE-type evaluations (both formative and summative). There is immense educational value in a well-designed and thoughtfully implemented encounter with an expert Standardized Patient.
The biggest gap I’ve seen in these events is properly preparing students before, during, and after the event. Simulations are inherently stressful, and can be very anxiety-provoking. Intentionality on the part of faculty to make the simulation as positive as possible is a key to success, alongside quality scenario design and a high degree of organization.
Join Pamela Jeffries, Dean of Vanderbilt University School of Nursing as she leads a panel in discussion on using simulations in nurse practitioner education to assess competency-based outcomes. With Dr. Jeffries will be Pamela Slaven-Lee, Cara Padovano, and April Kapu. Moderating the session will be Anne Dabrow-Woods, Chief Nurse of Wolters Kluwer, Health Learning, Research & Practice.

“This has been nearly two years in the making,” said Dr. Marti Trudeau, the Director of the Practical Nursing program. “ I’m excited to get students here, learning and using the wonderful skills lab that we have created.”
