Every day, 2.2 million career civil servants work on behalf of the American people. A nonpartisan, career civil service has been a hallmark of American government for more than 140 years. Congress has consistently protected the federal workforce from improper political influence and today OPM reinforces and clarifies these longstanding civil service protections and merit system principles. #ResponsePolicing - Having finished my night shift and completed my set for the week, I'm taking a moment to engage in my regular reflective practice. This Response Policing Week has been truly inspiring, especially seeing senior leaders of Bedfordshire Police joining us on patrol, standing shoulder to shoulder with response officers. To prepare for this week, several senior leaders, some of whom haven't been on the frontlines for years, even underwent a PST (personal safety training) reassessment last week. I personally had the pleasure of crewing with Chief Inspector Mark Farrant, who worked nonstop and enthusiastically embraced the challenge, always with the smile of someone who loved every moment of it throughout the shift. During our time together, we had the opportunity to share our backgrounds and discuss our lives. In his enthusiasm, I saw the same passion that drove me to rejoin the police and start anew with the same energy and commitment. I believe that this initiative goes beyond just celebrating Response officers; it creates great opportunities for new officers and senior leaders to connect directly, combining experience with fresh perspectives on modern procedures and public expectations. As a "former" leader myself, I know how crucial it is for those in command to understand the realities of frontline work. Experiencing the daily life of a response officer firsthand gives senior leaders a real understanding of the challenges we face, helping them make better decisions in the future. This direct engagement is precisely what many officers often ask for, as it allows leaders to understand our daily realities and make informed decisions about how we should police. Such initiatives by the College of Policing are highly commendable. If I were asked for my opinion, I would suggest that senior officers/leaders join patrol at least once a month. This would be beneficial for the reasons already explained, and besides, they’d just love it. 💙 👮♂️ #Leadership #PoliceCommunity #FrontlineHeroes #PoliceWeek #BedfordshirePolice #WeCanHelpYou

Absolutely. Have done plenty of this over the years. You will learn more in one day “on the job” than weeks of workshops and meetings. I couldn’t emphasise enough how important it is to go to where the value is created and see what is actually happening and talk to those doing the activity! In a lean six sigma world they call this a “Gemma walk” meaning the actual place.
You've heard of Undercover Boss but have you heard of Glaringly Obvious Leader? The florescent yellow really helped conceal my identity. 🥸 Yesterday, I was out cleaning the streets of Dundee... quite literally. I spent the shift working around Forest Park Road/ Blackness Road/Logie area to see things for myself. I always try to get out and see how services are being delivered on the ground. No BS, no nonsense and no chaperones: just me, the workers, a barrow and a grabber. I've previously been out working shifts with bin crews, carried out a couple of house clearances (which were a real eye opener) and been out with housing support teams. I'm out again to meet staff and the public to talk about the realities and the challenges. The best way to get the truth of the matter is to speak to those doing the job, day-in, day-out. In the coming weeks, I'll be joining teams across the council, from social work and criminal justice to housing and transport. I think it should be a mandatory part of Leaders/ politicians induction to go out and work a shift with staff or as we called it in school, "a day in the life of..." I genuinely like getting my hands dirty (although the dirty nappies, used sanitary pads and soiled boxer shorts were not so enjoyable) and getting stuck into work. I'd highly recommend it to other politicians. #Dundee

"It is then no surprise that dispatchers can experience diminished compassion satisfaction and burnout. The positive feelings dispatchers derive from the competent performance of fulfilling their duties can quickly subside when they did everything right, but the outcome of the incident was still terrible. The emotional exhaustion can be overwhelming for some dispatchers, reducing feelings of accomplishment. This can have adverse effects on individual attitudes, as well as team morale throughout the entire center." As leaders in law enforcement and fire safety, we understand the value of a well-trained team. But have you ever considered the true cost of constant hiring and training? Did you know that bringing on a new police officer can cost around $100,000, while the cost for each new firefighter can range from $25,000 to $100,000? And every vacant role can mean a loss of productivity ranging from $10,000 to $30,000. But it's not just about the finances. When experienced staff leave, we lose invaluable expertise that takes years to rebuild. Mentoring new hires also strains our existing resources. It's time for an open conversation about the true costs of constant hiring and training. Other industries have found innovative solutions to retain skilled, experienced staff long-term - it's time for our first responder agencies to do the same. Let's kickstart this crucial conversation today to revolutionize how we staff our police, fire, and emergency medical services! #LawEnforcement #FireSafety #FirstResponders #Staffing #Leadership #OpenDialogue
