What do you think will be the next must-have footwear style/brand? This week, two telling reports were released, indicating that the marketplace is primed for the next big footwear trend. The first is StockX’s “State of Resale” report, which examines shifts in consumer resale preferences. The second is Stifel’s 17th Annual Back-to-School Athletic Footwear Survey. Individually, each report highlights key trends we've been discussing, such as Nike's declining popularity, the continued rise of retro-running styles, and potential challenges facing the resale market. However, they also triangulate on one big emerging theme: The next must-have footwear style is a jump ball — and the style that ultimately prevails will redefine the competitive landscape. The outdoor gear resell/trade market is a great opportunity for consumers and brands to reduce waste, re-use loved gear, and introduce new participants to high quality products.

Very interesting read! I think On is trending upwards (but not on resale). I certainly see it more often and I think will have some trickle down to a more mainstream consumer as some mature out of retro / hype styles altogether.

The next must-have footwear style will require more than just aesthetic appeal. Consumers today demand substance: sustainability, versatility, and authenticity. Hoka and On are making waves now, both sit in precarious positions. Hoka will need to evolve as it learns what “maximal” truly means over time, and On must solidify its reason to exist beyond its current hype. Nostalgia will remain a factor, but only when balanced with innovation. New Balance and Adidas are revamping classics, but consumers also crave products that align with values like sustainability and comfort. The next big shoe will need to reflect the rise of athleisure, where technical performance and casual wear meet. Digital communities and social media are driving trends, and collaborations are key to success. Brands and shoes that tell a story and authentically tap into niche subcultures, like Salomon has, will emerge as winners. Finally, brands that offer personalization and tap into global cultural trends will take the lead in this crowded market. Personalization will need to be sustainable at scale however (not jibbitz). Ultimately, the next must-have style/brand will combine function, sustainability, and relevance, for redefining the footwear landscape.
