Now seems a good time to revisit “Sustainability” in the Footwear and Apparel industries. We’ve seen articles questioning brands’ commitments to it (see below), and recent visits to Industry Trade shows left us with the firm impression that brands haven't been requesting as many new sustainable innovations as in the past. Instead, they are focusing on tried and true "value" materials and not pushing for anything that may add cost. We want to know your thoughts. Is “Sustainability” on hold in our industry? https://lnkd.in/enrRf6K9 #footwear #apparel #supplychain #zefyrexperts
While I agree that governments have a responsibility to force behaviour via regulation I also beleive that companies have an equally important responsibity to drive behaviour through thoughtful marketting. Something most successful companies are very good at. It’s easier to drive change if customers see value in that change. The old adage - you can lead a horse to water… Perhaps the first step is for companies to properly understand the environmental impact of their design decisions (actual gemba not from industry database tools that do not fully capture the actual impacts) and truely build sustainability into their ethos from product creation to end of life for their products.

4moSustainability is not just on hold in apparel and footwear but as well in many other industries such as automotive, agriculture and others. The issue is that in an open market where true sustainable solutions (not green washed) are higher in price, they can only capture a certain market share. Also, products marketed as sustainable only appeal to a certain type of consumer. I think we reached the achievable plateau in many areas and significant increases may only be seen by cost reduction. But the reality also is that while sustainable materials may become more affordable so do non-sustainable solutions. At a point it may require laws and regulations such as the EU Green Deal and others for sustainably becoming mainstream.
