Building something for underrepresented markets | Ex-IFC (World Bank) | Ex-Goldman

Last year, I made a radical career change to get one step closer to what I believe is my life’s work: Push forward economic opportunities in a part of the world where I’m from - The Caribbean and Central America. From my time investing in venture, I have seen the power of technology to birth new opportunities for communities and invigorate generations of people to build a world that is better for them. Unfortunately, however, The Caribbean and Central America continue to be left behind in this technological race for change. In many regards, the cards are stacked against us — small and fragmented populations, lack of technology funding, and misconceptions around what types of countries can support a venture funded business. Last week, I traveled to the Fintech Islands conference in Barbados and saw what I always knew had the potential to exist in our region: Fintech companies creating innovating models to support our region of the Caribbean while making attractive returns for global investors. At Fix24, Alfredo Lopez (my co-founder) and I, debuted Onest, a company that we have been developing during the last 5 months and walked away with the 2nd Top Prize for interesting innovations with the ability to change the future of our region. At Onest, we’re using AI to underwrite credit for low-income communities and put credit in the hands of people that need it the most. We also use gamification and behavioral science to nudge positive behaviour so that our consumers can better understand how to manage their credit and unlock additional financial products in the future. Being at Fix24 and winning this award from global fintech investors is one of the first steps in our journey to help almost 80 million people across The Caribbean and Central America to achieve their dreams. #fintech #startup #innovation #latam
