Today, as part of SHV Energy’s Annual Global Health and Safety week, SunSource Energy is proud to kick-off a week-long campaign focused on highlighting health and safety as the utmost priority for everyone in the SunSource family. The packed agenda for this week aims to empower each and every colleague to become a health and safety leader. In the days ahead, several activities are planned to communicate the importance of inculcating a culture of safety in order to create a healthier, happier and more productive work environment. The Health & Safety week started with a senior leadership townhall which was held today to reinforce our safety-first culture as part of our ambition for zero incidents. We also distributed safety pledge cards to all employees designed to instil 7 core habits that drive the SunSource Energy’'s health and safety culture. Leaving aside the high Cost of the Vogtle Units 3 & 4 (Some due to Unique Circumstances/Unavoidable and some Typical of the Past (PRUDENCE Investigations) and Current State of the Nuclear Industry), here are my 2-Cents related to the ONLY Totally NEW Nuclear Plant in the U.S. After a GAP of 3 Decades.!***: (1) Generates/Provides much needed CLEAN/Reliable/Safe/Exceptionally High CF Energy - 24x7x365.! (Rain or Shine / Wind Blowing or Not/ Water Level in the Dam High or Low!/Gas Prices High or Low/Retiring High Polluting Coal-Fired Plants) (2) Available Experience/Infrastructures/Trained Craftsmen/Professionals should be an Asset for NEW Nuclear in the U.S. (Both existing Large Size and upcoming Highly Simplified, seemingly "Game-changing" SMRs) (3) Good Example of DOE Support/Loan Guarantee. (4) Seemingly sound Policy of Regulatory Approval of some CWIP in the Rate Base.! (5) Places U.S. on the Global Map as one of the Select Countries to have a Successfully Operating Advanced Generation III+ Reactor (AP1000). Hopefully, for the next 60 Years as Designed. (6) Help U.S. try to RE-gain Global Leadership in the Advanced Nuclear Technology ( Generation IV under Development should also help) *** Perfectly OK if some disagree.! Speaking of much Debated/Discussed/Criticized "Growth" in Capital Cost. ! [A] Vogtle Units 3 & 4 Original Estimate for Vogtle 3 & 4 was $13 billion, but the latest Cost has increased to $33-$35 billion.! (Growth= 35/13=........) Vs. [B] Vogtle Units 1 & 2 Original Estimates for Vogtle 1 and 2 were under $1 billion each, but final costs skyrocketed to nearly $9 billion.! (Growth = 9/(2x1)=.......) Vs. [C] Past History- Growth in Costs (Budwani DATABASE:1970-2023) The Average Annual % Increase in Capital Costs of Nuclear Plants was a whopping"17.6%" ! (Considering very Long Project Durations, the Overall Growth in Cost was LARGE- By a Factor of ....!) #DATABASE(1970-2023)
