"No one talks to me." "I have nothing in common with my team members." "I feel like I'm working in a vacuum." "I don't have anyone to talk to." These are common sentiments among employees experiencing #SocialIsolation at work. This isolation can increase an employee’s risk of experiencing loneliness, which can negatively impact their health, motivation, and productivity. In his latest, Dr. Bill Howatt shares how leaders can help mitigate social isolation and reap the benefits of a more #PsychologicallySafe workplace. https://lnkd.in/gYGfPv5Z #mentalhealth #psychologicalsafety

“Being lonely, studies shows, can actually damage your health as much as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. And experts insist that the growing number of Americans who report having no or very few friends is a huge contributor to our worsening mental health. Loneliness, it turns out, is a serious threat to your health. It's lousy for your business too. CEOs, surveys show, have particularly high levels of lonelienss. And things aren't much better for frontline employees. Surveys show that post pandemic, the number of people claiming to have "work friends" has dropped precipitously. Whether that's due to remote work or general exhaustion, it's bad for both employees' output or their mood. Research has found that work friends make us more productive, resilient, engaged, and less stressed. Plus, it's just a drag to work in isolation all the time -- as many discovered during the pandemic.” https://flip.it/4KtqkY #loneliness #lonelinessepidemic #lonely #healthcare #health #healthandwellness #mentalhealth #business #productivity #employees #workplace

The World Health Organisation says “burnout” is a significant occupational phenomenon that has increased drastically in recent years. Burned-out and overwhelmed employees disengage from the workplace, show clear signs of exhaustion, and often look for alternative work opportunities. With this in mind, tracking your employee’s mental and physical health is important. Pay attention to signs of exhaustion, like the heavy reliance on caffeine, yawning, or even a slower-than-usual pace in your team member’s workflow. The attitude of your employee might begin to change too. They may appear to be overwhelmingly negative towards other colleagues or attempt to isolate themselves from their peers, taking part in meetings less than usual. In some cases, they could even become more argumentative or aggressive. If you notice signs of burnout, speak to your staff member about how you can help them manage their workload.
