On National Build Day, Alabama Professional Services and Sleep in Heavenly Peace joined forces to tackle a daunting issue: child bedlessness. This initiative aimed to provide hand-made beds to children who, without this support, would have to sleep on floors or couches, contributing to severe health and emotional challenges. Reflecting on my own experiences, I remember volunteering for community projects similar to this where we came together, rolled up our sleeves, and made a tangible impact. There’s something incredibly fulfilling about working collectively to uplift those in need—it's a reminder of the positive change we can create in our communities. Did you know that sleep deprivation can lead to hyperactivity, anxiety, and depression in children? The 24 hour news cycle, makes us all aware of the evils of the world. War, hunger, illness, poverty, crime… so much pain. What is not frequently showcased in the news, is the amazing amount of empathy and generosity that exists in the world. As a social impact strategist, working for the largest social service agency in the United States (and maybe the world), the NYC Department of Social Services, I am blessed with the opportunity to channel the generosity of individuals and organizations, to serve over 3 million vulnerable New Yorkers. This generosity manifests in in-kind donations, cultural and educational programming, health support, philanthropy investments in innovative interventions, capacity building, and much more. 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲-𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 I recently had the privilege of facilitating an impactful strategic convening for the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust and their Reconnecting Youth grantee cohort. Our goal was to understand new possibilities for collaboratively supporting youth aged 16-24 in Forsyth County. By creating an intentional, youth-centric convening rooted in lived experiences, we uncovered several insightful takeaways: ✅ Directly engaging youth is essential for developing relevant and responsive programming. Their voices must help shape decision-making. ✅ Partnerships that break down silos and enhance resource sharing amplify what no single organization can achieve alone. ✅ Holistic strategies addressing mental health, education, safety, family dynamics and more are imperative for creating sustainable change. It was incredible to witness the passion and potential of these community organizations. When groups with a common purpose come together and center the populations they serve, the solutions that emerge are richer, more innovative and designed for real impact. I’m honored to collaborate with mission-driven partners like the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust to think boldly about how we tackle social challenges. Studies show that teens spend approximately nine hours a day in front of screens. Kids aged 8-12 get about six hours of screen time each day, creating a society that is being raised in a digital environment. Why not try some habits that promote connection with your child. 💙Less technology. Your child will remember if you gave your full attention or just listened with half an ear. Dropping everything else when you interact with your child demonstrates how important he/she is to you; much more important than a phone call or email from work. 💙One-on-one time. Every day, schedule 10-15 minutes with each child. Play a game, talk, or go for a walk. Don’t structure the time, let it be a personal time to connect. 💙Slow down. Every interaction is important, demonstrate that you’re listening and that you care. 💙No ritual is better for providing regular connection than a bedtime routine. Reading and talking about their day, gives your children a sense of belonging and security. Don’t rush through it. When you connect with your children every day and in a number of ways, you’ll gain benefits too. The relationship you build will establish positive returns. No idea why any of this is happening. You're vulnerable, scared, and confused. Your sense of security has been shattered, and you're left grappling with emotions well beyond your years. The life-altering impact this single experience could have on any child or youth is hard to imagine. The damage can be catastrophic: 80% of youth who've been removed from their homes and taken into foster care will exhibit mental health issues. 80%. This is a staggering statistic – but there's hope. Our Love Box and Dare to Dream programs are designed to build radical community around foster families and the children and youth in their care. This promotes placement stability where healthy adults can consistently and intentionally show up to nurture environments where kids can thrive. Placement stability = better outcomes. National Nonprofit Day reminds us of the vital role nonprofits play in building stronger communities, supporting those in need, and driving positive change. CCSA was started to address the stigma around substance use and addiction within Jewish communities. Through community awareness events and school programs, we have extended our reach far beyond what we could have imagined.
