Heading into our 4th year Woodline Primary this quote resonates with me on an even deeper level. The last few years has provided us with extraordinary evidence as to what is possible when children feel calm, connected and with a sense of belonging. I believe as a society we must prioritize emotional safety in education. 💫 This can look like choice and autonomy, non punitive environments and making it safe enough for children to express how they feel, whilst teaching them healthy ways to express themselves. 💫 4 years in we are seeing the shifts and changes. We are seeing growth emotionally and academically. Teaching kids the design process is one of my favorite parts of landscape architecture.

Have you ever encountered something new and you felt like you knew nothing? This was how I felt when I first encountered the Montessori approach to education in practice, but with the right guidance and support, we can merge theory and practice. I once came across a child's academic report that mentioned their ability to confidently climb up and down the brown stairs. It read:'XYZ can confidently climb up and down the brown stairs' 🫣 At that moment, a line from a movie popped into my head 'You know nothing Jon Snow' 😄 Dear teacher, your case does not have to be like Jon's; we have the opportunity to learn and grow just like our learners. This might just be an opportunity to know a little about the 'brown stair or broad stair' used in Montessori education. The brown stair is a wooden material with ten brown blocks of equal length but with varying width and height. This simple yet powerful tool is used to develop a child's awareness of sizes as well as fine motor skills to mention a few. Two Loudoun elementary schools were recently named in the top three best elementary schools in Virginia according to a Niche ranking. Ashburn’s Waxpool Elementary School ranked first among the 1,124 elementary schools included in the list and Aldie’s Goshen Post Elementary School ranked third, based on its academics, teachers, culture and diversity, and surveys from students and parents. Twelve other #Loudoun elementary schools ranked in the top 100. The Niche rankings differ from others that rely almost exclusively on test scores and academic performance in that it also includes input from students, alumni and parents, as well as quantitative data from sources such as the U.S. Department of Education to evaluate teachers, resources and facilities. The Inverted Pyramid: Listening Through the District, One School at a Time! Forest Acres Elementary (Easley, SC)   Enjoyed meeting with teachers and the FAES Admin Team!   Our meeting covered four topics: 1. Make It Better - recommendations for improving the district 2. The Strategic Plan - how to achieve our five goals 3. Innovation - what innovative ideas do you have for the school and district 4. The Framework – updates regarding progress on the five year plan for the foundational practices with MTSS/RTI at Work   This concludes the listening sessions at all (14) elementary schools in the district. Love the culture in each school and appreciate the hard work from each employee. A few quick notes - (1) the one word used by our parents, students and community to describe our district from the recent Cognia visit was "SAFE". Maybe that is why we expect 50,000 new people in our county in the next five years. (2) Yesterday was my first visit to a middle school with the inverted pyramid ... I asked the teachers how did you acquire the trust from so many parents to create a school where students feel safe and their reply: the students came to us with a sense of belonging from the elementary schools! What a compliment! (3) We will always tweak our approach each year but our core is solid so we will not be changing too much next year. Listening allows us to grow but to take everyone up the mountain together!! The first two laps (Early Childhood and Elementary) are finished for the Inverted Pyramid.
