Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy (CSP) is more than a concept—it’s a commitment to transform education and uphold diverse cultural identities within our school systems. In our latest episode, we had the pleasure of diving deep into CSP with Lorena. Here are three key takeaways: - 🌱 **CSP as a Stance**: It's not just about being culturally relevant or responsive; it's about sustaining and restoring diverse cultural identities within the education system for positive social transformation. - 🔄 **Theory to Practice**: Lorena emphasized the necessity to move CSP from theory to tangible teaching methods. She shares practical PD exercises and examples that educators can implement in the classroom. - 🏫 **Institutionalizing Change**: Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy should be woven into the fabric of our educational institutions—from leadership down to daily classroom activities—to ensure it becomes a lasting part of the culture. 📚 *Resource Highlight*: Lorena's book, Textured Teaching, was spotlighted as a practical guide to bringing CSP to life in classrooms. Tune in to *Our Classroom* for a journey into education that supports diversity, champions multicultural perspectives, and stands firmly on business for lasting change. In her time in public school, Maura Hart never felt safe. Because of this, as adjunct faculty of Antioch's MEd for Experienced Educators, she has dedicated much of her career supporting educators to give them the tools they need to create a safe space within their classrooms. “Rightful Presence in the Experiential Classroom," a course offered in the Experienced Educators program, builds on the concept of rightful presence, a teaching methodology that aims to combat systemic racism by validating each student’s value and their right to be in the classroom, regardless of race or ability. Rightful presence is a framework of a Critical Skills Classroom, which allows the student to choose what they want to learn based on their culture and values, ultimately taking a lot of pressure off of teachers. “If you’re a classroom teacher, and it’s a real struggle, and you’re thinking about leaving, but that’s breaking your heart, try it out," Hart says, “You’ll find meaning and power in teaching using the critical skills classroom methodology.” You can read more about "Rightful Presence in the Experiential Classroom" and Hart's role here: https://lnkd.in/gbjCAGEM

Beyond Traditional Mentoring Models In some school districts the mentoring consists of the principal knocking on an experienced teacher’s door and asking if they will mentor the new teacher in the neighboring classroom. A promise of some small sum of money is offered and that is the end of the mentoring training and support the mentor teacher receives. The new teacher is introduced to their new “mentor” who shows them where the faculty lounge is, how to use the copy machine, and the bathroom that is furthest away from students. As they part ways after their first meeting the mentor offers, let me know if you have any questions. Leaving the new teacher standing in the hallway not knowing what they do not know and not really sure where to start. In order to be effective mentors have to be trained to be mentors. They have to have a clear framework to work within, and they need clear guidelines for mentoring. It is not enough to make an assignment and pay a stipend to an experienced teacher - this is not mentoring. You can learn more about the Wyoming Teacher Corps here: https://lnkd.in/gPeufMZD

Here is one of my post on preparing school leaders in our “new normal”.
Daniel Perry writes, "For many potential school leaders, the preparation experience is like swimming in the shallow end of the pool. It’s a lot of learning and applying transactional skills around school budgeting, school law, and instructional observations. But the role of an effective school leader demands so much more." So, what would it take for school leaders to be better prepared for the critical role they play in a healthy instructional system? Now a managing director at Leading Educators and former instructional superintendent for Chicago Public Schools, Daniel offers his thoughts on how the sector can prepare school leaders to succeed in 2024 and beyond: https://hubs.la/Q02qpP_60

Attention all School Superintendents! #EducationalLeadership is what we “do”, and that’s why I really want to begin a Superintendent’s Reading Challenge on LinkedIn: “Superintendents READ 2024” The requests are simple to incorporate into your busy schedules. 1. Place the name of a school on your “weekly” calendar. 2. Allocate one hour of time. 3. Choose a different grade level each week (PreK-3). 4. Read a book to students in one classroom. 5. Speak with students about the importance of reading. 6. Take pictures and post on #LinkedIn & #Instagram Using the “official” hashtag: #SuperintendentsREAD2024 Many district level Strategic Plans that I read, often emphasize how the district will focus on increasing reading proficiency in grades K-3. By participating in this challenge, #Superintendents will demonstrate to teachers, students, and parents that reading is a priority. If a School Superintendent read to a class every week for 1 hour from January - June 2024, the approximate total time spent reading to students would be 1,440 minutes. I have no doubt that Dr. Andraé Townsel, Superintendent, is up for this challenge! 😊 Share the challenge- Repost #SuperintendentsREAD2024 #Reading #teachers #instructionalcoaching #edleadership #educationalleadership #schoolleaders #principals #NASBE #AASA #ASCD #literacy #K12schools #innovation #earlychildhoodeducation #highereducation

Only a quarter of teachers feel adequately recognized for their work. We know that recognition has huge positive effects on teacher performance and school outcomes. Take a second to recognize the teachers in your life. Not only does it boost morale, but we also know it leads to higher productivity, engagement, retention rates, and satisfaction scores from students and parents. Plus, a little gratitude can go a long way. #teacherappreciation
