I love listening to higher-ed podcasts on long drives. Lots of good ones but my favorite is The Truth About College Admission, hosted by Rick Clark and Brennan Barnard. During a recent 5-hour drive, I listened to their latest episode, The Truth About Institutional Priorities, featuring TJ Thelbert Snowden, Jr., Ed.D., Chief of Staff to the President at Morehouse College. Some highlights and takeaways: - When interacting with colleges, be bold. Ask the questions that are on your mind. Agency is a powerful thing! Find out what a college's institutional priorities are if it's unclear on the website. - Visit colleges when students are on campus. Take the time to speak with staff and students to help you visualize how you might fit in. You can tell a lot by "being in the space" where students congregate. It can also help answer the "Why this school?" question. - Both Rick and TJ were transfer students (me, too). Increasingly, students are finding different routes to their goals. Being flexible and being open to alternate paths can expand options. -Understand that institutional priorities can change (though there are common themes year over year). Instead of trying to fit into one of those priority categories at a specific school, it makes more sense to expand the college list to schools that will appreciate you just as you are. -Rick uses a great analogy of a bowl of soup as the institutional priorities. Every school has a different-sized bowl (class size) with different ingredients (priorities) aimed at building a "Class". A college doesn't need just carrots in its "soup". If they get 10,000 applicants to the same major (think CS) and 300 applicants to a less-popular major (think Religious Studies), guess who's got a better shot of making it into the soup? In today's episode of the Grad School Femtoring Podcast, I share advice on what to do if you run into a tight grad school deadline. My advice is particularly tailored towards non-traditional grad school applicants and individuals returning to school later in life. I ask that you consider a few things before starting your application materials. Consider the cost of attendance and if applying is worth your time and financial investment; see if you can talk to alumni, faculty, or grad students to gauge the worth of the program. And after that, you’ll need to work diligently to prepare your application materials. If you need additional supporting navigating the graduate school application process, check out my Grad Apps Demystified self-paced course. You can find it at the shop on my website or DM me to learn more. [ID: Video of Dra.
