Fair markets are key to food security. Business Daily Africa published an editorial by the Competition Authority of Kenya's Acting Director General Dr Adano Roba and the Shamba Centre's Executive Director Carin Smaller. FSRP is a major climate-resilient development program that makes effective use of new generation climate information services to improve climatic and disaster risk management and the application of climate-smart agriculture innovations to boost the agricultural productivity in West African #FoodSystems. "Fostering synergy between FSRP and AICCRA offers a great spillover opportunity to scale up AICCRA-led evidenced climate services and climate-smart agriculture to benefit all CILSS-ECOWAS member countries and beyond," says Robert Zougmore, AICCRA West Africa Lead. "As two World Bank-funded projects within the same region and built under a long-term programmatic approach, AICCRA and FSRP are two unique programs with potential to strengthen regional institutional capacities and make economies of scale. The upcoming African Food Systems Forum in September 2024 will focus on the transformative work happening across Africa’s food systems. One of the impactful projects highlighted during the event will be the Developing Inclusive Grain Value Chains in #Nigeria (DIGVCN). This project, a collaboration between IDH, Nestlé, and TechnoServe, has significantly improved the livelihoods of over 22,000 smallholder farmers by providing essential training, facilitating access to finance, and enhancing market opportunities. With achievements like €7.7 million in input credit, the creation of over 262,000 jobs, and the widespread adoption of sustainable agricultural practices, the project has made strides in strengthening the grain value chain and fostering economic growth. The Forum will offer an opportunity to delve into these successes, exploring how similar approaches can be scaled and adapted across different regions to build a more resilient and inclusive food system throughout Africa. Following a successful workshop early this month to reflect on the AFS Forum 2023 in #Tanzania, Managing Director, Africa Food Systems Forum, Amath Pathe SENE speaks on accelerating private sector participation in Africa's food systems. "Drawing on the private sector’s strengths —agility, access to capital, efficiency, and profitability — we can boost food production, improve distribution networks, reduce post-harvest losses and food waste, and expand market access and opportunities for farmers and other players across food systems. We must show how agri food systems value chains offer profitable business opportunities that indeed deserve investment." During the ongoing High-Level Dialogue on Food Systems, King Letsie III emphasized the importance of organizational engagement and cooperation to support efforts in creating vibrant and sustainable food systems in Lesotho. He reminded participants that August is earmarked as Food and Agriculture Month and urged everyone to take this opportunity to reflect on how the nation is progressing on Lesotho's key principles of peace, rain, and prosperity. The issue of nutrition,  the King who is FAO Special Goodwill Ambassador for Nutrition said community involvement in agriculture, and future nutrition are part of an interconnected development system that requires a collective effort to optimize the resources and expand the fiscal attitude needed to achieve a greater and more sustainable future. “It is therefore important that, as a nation, we move towards commercialization in agriculture,” he said. He pointed out that it is the role of the government to develop policies and a regulatory environment conducive to inclusive growth and private sector investment. It is time for the government to consider policies that offer incentives for investment, facilitate small programmes' ability to access finance, markets, and technology, and enable increased access to water. The King also pointed out that the private sector can take advantage of these opportunities by catalyzing investment in the sector, seeking out operational investments, and investing in public-private partnerships. #sustainability #foodsecurity
