Cycling UK has published a five-year strategy, which aims to attract higher engagement in cycling, with the mission statement outlining the elimination of poisonous air pollution, obesity and traffic congestion. Their five-year strategic objectives are: -Improve perceptions of cycling so that everyone sees the benefits - Boost the number and diversity of people who cycle - Make cycling an even more positive experience - Increase transport choice by enabling and encouraging more people to cycle local journeys - Achieve greater impact by becoming the best possible charity we can be Read the full strategy here: https://lnkd.in/eZwCCnNe

During my time as a graduate engineer with P.H. McCarthy & Partners, we in conjunction with Hyder Consulting in the UK, brought an N15/N13 Ballybofey/Stranorlar Bypass scheme through Constraints Study and Route Selection. I left the company in 2002 - In 2007 the Detailed Design was subsequently the subject of Part 10 process (EIS - Planning and Development Regulations, 2001).  Despite being recommended for approval by the An Bord Pleanála Inspector, the scheme was refused planning permission in 2009 on the basis of concerns around proximity of minor junctions and accesses to the proposed roundabouts; a perceived lack of detail in relation to the main river crossing and impacts upon tributaries of the river; and unacceptable proximity to one particular inhabited dwelling. Depending on one's point of view this was either a fine example of why we have a robust planning system or a disappointing waste of taxpayers' money - given my limited involvement, I honestly can't say which applies. In any case, it's good to see that funding is now committed for the replacement scheme, and the other Donegal TEN-T projects - the positive implications for road safety in the county can't be overstated.

Prioritising human-centred modes of transport in #Hertfordshire will benefit people and the environment. New ‘Dutch style’ roundabouts and 20mph zones will improve road safety, health, traffic congestion, noise pollution, etc. Walking and cycling are not just recreational activities or environmentally conscious choices. Many groups rely on #ActiveTravel as their essential modes of transport. The changes will enable more families to choose active travel for commuting, accessing the local shops and going to school (instead of being reliant on the car). This new #Infrastructure will help to improve #MobilityEquity in my local area. #SustainableMobility #Placemaking
