“What these results show is that dog ownership can have a positive influence on children’s physical activity and that we start to see those benefits from early childhood” – Emma Adams, PhD Candidate. A first-of-its kind longitudinal study by Telethon Kids Institute and The University of Western Australia researchers has identified a clear link between homes with dogs and children’s physical activity levels. The three-year investigation followed 600 children aged two to seven. Those whose families acquired a dog during the study period saw a jump in children’s physical activity – particularly among girls. By contrast, children in families who lost a dog during the study saw a marked decline in physical activity. The study emphasises the potential for responsible dog ownership to promote healthy movement behaviors early in life – in turn contributing to children’s physical and mental health and reducing their long-term risk of chronic disease.
