How far have 🇪🇺 countries come in their environmental and climate targets? 🌍 The new report by the European Environment Agency’s (EEA) shows that the EU may not meet the majority of the targets by 2030. According to the EEA analysis, targets on energy consumption, rate of circular material use, and share of area under organic farming, all look unlikely to be achieved by 2030. However, the report shows that targets for green economy and the reduction of premature deaths due to pollution are likely to be achieved. EU Member States need to take action to align their policies with the agreed environmental and climate targets and making sustainability a central element in all policies. The #environmental #transition or how to balance risks (#ESG, #risks, #farmersprotest , #yellowvest) The yellow vest crises in France in 2018-2019 and those of farmers in 2024 have at least one common factor. Indeed in 2018 the origin of the movement is linked to the announcement of the planned increase of the french domestic consumption tax on energy products (TICPE) to finance the environmental transition that threatens the purchasing power of households, especially in rural areas where you need your car. In 2024, farmers denounced in particular the constraints of the ecological transition on their activity, perceived as a distortion of competition with other States, reduction of pesticides, elimination of tax advantage on off-road diesel, difficult negotiations with manufacturers… Their demands are diverse, but they are consistent with the same observation. That of no longer being able to live from their profession. In both cases we see how difficult it is to reconcile environmental policies and the maintenance of purchasing power or income. So the environmental transition must be accompanied by: - financial assistance measures for the most vulnerable individuals or businesses in order to invest - real alternative solutions - a schedule adapted to the market - flexible rules and follow-up that are more incentive than mandatory adapted to regional situations …and lots of communications, explanations, training and education explaining the value (As this graph explains (copyright #NGSF and #INSEAD), if we do nothing about the transition to net-zero, we will have very high temperatures and physical risks, but no technological innovation or climate policies. This will result in low transition risks. On the contrary, using high technological innovation and aggressive climate policies can lead to significant transition risks. If these actions are effective, global warming will remain under control and we will have low physical risks.) More than ever, people on the ground must work with those who make the regulations. We urgently need the right balancing between Climate regulations and reality on the field . Too many rules kill the rules and nothing happens

It’s become the environmental issue of our times here in the UK. And with facts like these it’s hardly surprising. The State of Our Rivers 2024 report says we have reached “a desperate state of affairs”: * No single stretch of river in England or Northern Ireland is in good overall health. * Just 15% of English, 31% of Northern Irish and 50% of Irish river stretches reach good ecological health standards. * Toxic chemicals that remain in ecosystems for decades pollute every stretch of English rivers. As someone who used to work for the Environment Agency, I know how they are operating with one hand tied behind their backs, after more than a decade of real terms cuts in their resources for water quality regulation. And facing into an industry that can shrug off multi million pound fines, that prioritises short term dividends for shareholders over long term infrastructural investment needs. But we’ve reached a vital tipping point when the public says enough is enough, and I take my hat off to all the campaigners and activists who’ve helped get us to this point. Having followed my local river the Avon from sea to source (see post from a few months ago), and seen the choking run off from farmland, the ceaseless pressure of new development and the treatment works right at the source - downstream of which the water quality tests poor - it’s not hard to see how these are endemic and deep rooted problems that will require action on many fronts. If you haven’t already, do get involved in one the many excellent campaigns. River Action UK The Rivers Trust Surfers Against Sewage Save Our Rivers https://lnkd.in/eHzavf4a

🌟 February brought on pivotal moments for #sustainability and #ClimateAction in the #EuropeanUnion. Let's delve into the key highlights 🌟: 🌿 The European Commission proposed bold recommendations to slash net greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by #2040, igniting vital discussions with stakeholders to shape future legislative initiatives. The decision was criticized by the big 10 environmental #NGOs for not being stringent enough. 🌱 The European Parliament's adoption of the #NatureRestorationLaw is a landmark achievement, with ambitious goals to restore significant portions of the #EU's land and sea areas by #2030 and beyond. This commitment to #biodiversity restoration is a testament to our collective responsibility to protect our planet's #ecosystems. 🚜 #Farmers made their voices heard in #Brussels, expressing a range of concerns regarding #EU agricultural policies. These protests shed light on issues such as toxic lobby relationships, political self-interest, and the need for a more equitable food and farming system. 💡 A promising step forward came with the provisional agreement on a voluntary framework for high-quality #CarbonRemoval certification. This initiative promotes innovation in carbon removal technologies and encourages sustainable practices like carbon farming throughout #Europe. 🏭 The Commission welcomed the provisional political agreement on the Net-Zero Industry Act, which will enhance the resilience and competitiveness of clean #technology manufacturing in the EU. #NZIA Follow us to stay updated on the latest developments! 🌟 #Sustainability #ClimateAction #EU #Innovation #EnvironmentalProtection

A survey published on the eve of the Paris International Agricultural Show showed 62 percent of #farmers believe an environmental transition is necessary, this has been overlooked in the #farmerprotests as a minority seek to exploit the opportunity for their benefit ... the #climate and #biodiversity crisis are being weaponised for short-term political and electoral gain

On our way to a European election, people need real reasons to feel proud to be European and to see the reasons why we should vote. If EU leaders like Commission President Von der Leyen allow nature to be destroyed and climate action to be dropped, as described in this video, then both the purpose for the EU and our futures are gone. I hope you'll share this video widely, because there's so much at stake here. Those who say the farmers need help are right - but then EU leaders should focus on the 2/3 of farmers that own less than 5 hectares in Europe and are struggling. Because they are not the ones destroying nature, land and soil through the mass use of industrial chemical farming practices. And they need to be heard, not just by larger actors like agribusiness representative in chief, Copa Cogeca, who only serve to manipulate them. The problem is and has always been agribusiness, who are only interested in ever more yield and profits at the cost of planet and people. Their model is all wrong. So let's stop before we say 'farmers' and think about that. Because there is no such thing. There are very different experiences within that wide diverse group and some are playing a dangerous game with our future. There is an alternative to all of this. We can use these elections to do our homework and vote for people who will: 1) Listen to people not just agribusiness and multinational corporations that still get most of the air time with top EU leaders 2) Give a shit about the sustaining of life on the planet beyond the next 5-10 years 3) And the lives of the people on it, with particular concern for those who are most screwed over in society
The conservatives & the far right are trying to kill the Green Deal. Little by little, regulation after regulation, they’re weakening ambition or simply rejecting proposals that are essential to maintain liveable conditions on this planet (such as the regulation to halve pesticides use by 2030). Worse, they claim to do this to defend farmers, rural areas and the economy. But what economy will we have once our soils are bare, insects disappear and regular floods & droughts makes it impossible to grow food or live a decent life? This is not about 2 visions clashing with each other - this is about science denial amd short term piolitical gain. And right now, theyre winning because they see theres no political cost to attacking environmental regulations. So we're going all in. We need a massive mobilisation to save the green deal, fight the narrative that environmental regulations are about taxes and targetting the most vulnerable and instead demand a fair and just transition to be able to live decent lives in a healthy environment. If you’re willing to fight and not let this be the way history unfolds, please fill the form below and share it & this video massively. Big companies are harming our planet without paying the price. A new study found that the world's biggest corporations caused nearly $4 trillion worth of damage to the environment in just one year. This hidden cost isn't reflected in product prices, meaning we all foot the bill in the end through things like polluted air and water. 🚨 Burning fossil fuels is a major culprit. The study points a finger at activities like generating electricity from coal as the biggest environmental offender. Industries like agriculture and livestock also contribute significantly to the problem through land use and pollution. ☢️ It's time for change. The study calls for companies to measure and reduce their environmental impact, and for governments to create policies that hold businesses accountable. This will not only protect our planet but also create a fairer economic system where everyone pays their fair share. ⚖️ Follow for more climate justice news!: https://buff.ly/3A81Z07 #climatechange #environment #sustainability #justice #action #localizedclimateaction #energytransition #socialimpact #equity #equityandinclusion
