International Power to X workshop - 12 May 2024 - Ahoy Rotterdam Converting green electricity from renewable sources into storable energy carriers such as hydrogen, ammonia or dimethyl ether is a practical solution with several key advantages: these Power-to-X energy carriers guarantee energy security independent of the volatility of sustainable energy production; they can be transported over long distances; and they are suitable for defossilizing sectors that can currently be electrified only to a limited extent or not at all. The mobility sector (shipping and aviation), the industrial sector (steel and cement production) and the chemical industry will remain dependent on green energy sources and chemicals in the medium term. The content of the workshop will be jointly developed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE and the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research TNO with the support of the Port of Rotterdam. 🌱 At Bosch, we are looking beyond traditional energy sources to more sustainable alternatives. That's why we're focusing on #hydrogen, which we believe will play a central role in meeting our future climate-neutral energy needs. Renewable power can be generated most efficiently in the world's sunniest and windiest regions, where it is not always needed. 👉 We therefore need a storage medium to transfer this energy between regions, and chemical carriers such as hydrogen. This week, we signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Eletrobras in Brazil. This document represents our mutual commitment to explore the feasibility of producing and using renewable hydrogen in industrial processes, with the aim of driving decarbonization in this sector🌱✨ What's the plan? In what is being considered a world-first, German manufacturer Schott has successfully produced high-quality optical glass using 100% hydrogen in their furnace, a major step towards moving from natural gas for glass manufacturing. While there are many hurdles yet to be overcome including reliable, long-term supply of hydrogen, initial trials have shown promising results. The increase in use cases for hydrogen is encouraging for the sector. If we hope to garner better adoption, a concerted effort by all all the stakeholders in the industry is required to reduce the cost of renewable hydrogen, Currently, this is the biggest roadblock in its widespread adaptation.
