Great to be part of a diverse panel at yesterday's letsrecycle.com national conference discussing priorities for the next government for the waste and resources strategy. To summarise my thoughts:- 1) Avoid backsliding with recycling performance - Let's protect good performance where it exists already so we don’t throw out the baby with the bathwater. Aluminium packaging is already achieving great recycling rates and beverage cans are at 82% recycling rate; let's not jeopardise that! 2) Injecting some speed, not haste – difficult to support EPR more than conceptually right now, as we don’t know some very important information (like how it’s going to be governed and how much it’s going to cost!). We need detail to be published ASAP so it can be examined, debated and the feedback used to improve things. With a DRS, we need to get on with that urgently, pending my final point… 3) Inspire confidence, set the tone – the Scottish DRS collapse had severe ramifications in the value chain, knocking confidence and undermining trust in these producer responsibility schemes despite industry buy-in. The next government must set their tone and priorities early to de-risk the process for producers and retailers, by working with devolved administrations to clarify the rules and most importantly stick to them so businesses can get on and invest in delivery and making the most of the opportunities. Other members of the panel Anna Willetts John Coates MCIWM Surabhin Chackiath and Peter Jones had some fascinating inputs of their own from their areas of expertise, ably chaired by Hattie Parke FCIWM. Thanks for sharing this picture John Coates MCIWM!
Had a fantastic day at the #letsrecycle national conference today being a late invitation onto the panel debate My fellow panellists were insightful and erudite and I thoroughly enjoyed being up there with them As I said in my wrap up, let’s get on with implementing the policies that are underway and accept that we may just have to be happy with imperfection for their first iteration

🤯 "We are living — for the first time in history — in an era where obesity is a bigger problem than hunger", Justin Siegel. We are thrilled to have participated in The Periodic Table of Food Initiative (PTFI) global launch on April 23-24 in an event that celebrated food diversity, scientific advances, and community innovation. During the event, Dr. Justin Siegel, Director of the Innovation Institute for Food & Health, and Professor at the University of California, Davis talked about how the world today has a higher instance of obesity than hunger (see The Lancet publication here https://bit.ly/44lYrCu). He reflected that solving this issue requires focusing on food quality over quantity. 🫘🥚 Dr. Siegel's work has shown that protein (the second most important nutrient after water!) gets absorbed in different quantities depending on its molecular composition and who is eating it. He foresees that this new knowledge will drive the deployment of technologies that help us unlock the full potential of food proteins. 🍼👶 Meanwhile, Dr. Bruce German, also a professor at the University of California, Davis, shared how his research group discovered that fiber in breast milk feeds a specific beneficial microbe in the infant's gut. Using what his group learned from babies, he proposes that the next step is to measure the vast fibers in food to give people the right ones they need for their specific goals. European Roaster Friends: there is only one more week to express your interest in attending the "Strategy Workshop for Specialty Roasters" that Caravela Coffee is hosting in Copenhagen, one day before #WorldofCoffee begins. Please take us up on this opportunity to tease out new (or improved) ideas with YOUR team on OUR dime. Space is limited and only a few spots remain. We're making this investment because we know what it means to pour into our partners. More than a decade ago, we launched our producer education program, PECA, to provide technical support to the producers from whom we source the coffees you love. That support comes at no cost to the producers nor are there obligations to sell us their coffees. The return on investment (ROI) is a prosperous relationship that improves over time. We know that this works at Origin and we are convinced that it will work at Destination; but only if you're willing to join us. Here are 3 great reasons to join us on Wednesday, 26 June: 1. Strategy and Innovation Professor and Author Vaughn Tan is facilitating 2. The event will be held at Admiralgade 26: https://lnkd.in/e2M6zugR 3. This is a "no-sell" zone for Caravela We hope that you'll think of this strategy session as an organizational self-care commitment before entering #WorldofCoffee. Here are the 3 steps we invite you to take: 1. Express your interest: https://lnkd.in/e5PD4wHu 2. Arrive to Copenhagen in time to meet us at 1pm on Wednesday, 26 June 3. Commit to the process and prepare to have some fun with your team If you have any questions, please drop me a line. We hope to see you there! Seriously. We do!
👋 Meet Prof. Vaughn Tan, our workshop facilitator. We're excited to announce our upcoming Specialty Roasters Workshop in Copenhagen on June 26th. Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to strengthen your team's ability to develop and execute fast and effective experiments to improve. 🎥 Check out this video invitation from Prof. Vaughn Tan to learn more about the workshop and why it's tailored specifically for specialty roasters. https://lnkd.in/eeMh8J5n 🖱️ Follow the link to learn more and express your interest by June 5th! https://lnkd.in/e5PD4wHu Hope to see you in Copenhagen 🇩🇰! #SpecialtyRoasters #BetterCoffee #CopenhagenEvent #SpecialtyGreenCoffeeExperts #Caravela #CoffeeCommunity
