Interesting update from Benevity on the top causes list of 2023! It doesn’t surprise me that global and humanitarian relief organizations make up the majority of this list.

The top causes list for 2023 on Benevity is out today, and the results are both heartening and heart-breaking... The highlights: 💙 Global nonprofits received a record-breaking $3.2 billion in donations through the Benevity platform in 2023 – a 14% year-over-year increase. 💙 More than 2.3 million people donated to causes around the world – a 22% increase over 2022. 💙 $83.5 million was donated during the last quarter of 2023 to nonprofits supporting humanitarian relief and crisis response for the people of Israel and Palestine, with organizations focused on both regions hitting the charts. What's heartening? ❤️ The fact that we are seeing employee giving increase when, generally, individual giving is down. This tells us that business isn't just making statements and posturing when it comes to ESG or doing good, they are actually making a difference by promoting these opportunities to their employees and rewarding them with matching dollars to multiply their impact. What's heartbreaking? 💔 It's become clear that a crisis-driven world has become the new normal. Unsurprisingly, support for international and humanitarian crises rose last year, fueled by natural disasters and a deeply divisive Israel-Hamas war. This was so pronounced, it displaced the focus on local community support that had been a hallmark of the ‘Quiet Giving’ trend we saw earlier in the year. In times like these, we just can't underestimate the power of business to mobilize humanitarian aid by empowering their employees to give to trusted organizations that transcend the poles of war and allow people to support people during a difficult time. While it was a particularly difficult time for many companies and social impact leaders, I hope that they can see that their efforts made a real difference. There are fantastic opportunities for philanthropists to make a direct difference outside London if they know where to look. Last week's report "Giving Back Better" written by Shivani H Menon from Onward comprehensively covered lots of issues around #philanthropy and a suite of recommendations to improve giving. One of the themes we particularly appreciated being raised is the geographical variation in philanthropic giving and how charities based outside London and supporting beneficiaries outside London can struggle to be seen. 🔸 “More than a third of all grants from the largest philanthropic charitable foundations were made into London”🔸 Large, national, well-established causes have the resources and networks to present their work to the philanthropic community, whilst hyper local causes, such as hospices, village halls and community groups are, by definition, relatively easy to find. However, charities in the middle like The Talent Tap, who are consciously targeting young people in disadvantaged communities and social mobility coldspots outside London are less accessible to prospective philanthropists. We are fortunate to have a small number of donors whose giving is motivated by our work in communities they would like to support but we would love to meet more. “I am particularly impressed by the work The Talent Tap does on The Isle of Wight, which is an area of great need, giving young people from disadvantaged backgrounds the confidence and connections to achieve their ambitions.” David Hoare We are really interested in joining the conversation of how we can be more visible within the #philanthropy world. The next report from the illustrious @John McLeod at JBWere 'The Bequest Report' has been released 👇👇 . A must read and rather timely after the Philanthropy Australia conference this week. Looking back on my notes from the launch series..... I'd noted the change, via ABS data updates that the intergenerational wealth transfer had increased from $3.4 to $5.4 trillion, yet only 1% of this is directed toward charities through bequests. My notes from the event also underscored John stressing the importance of aligning organisational goals with bequestors' motivations. Addressing the "What's In It For Me" (WIIFM) factor is crucial to unlock this potential. How we answer the question, "What will be done with the bequest?" is pivotal for future impact. Further to my other post, having read the full paper, I can confidently say it's a must-read for our sector. Another great report by JBWere 's John Mcleod and Kim Venter. It provides invaluable insights that can transform our approach to bequest strategies. A clear call to action is for us to look at our bequest strategies in light of this report. Discuss the findings with your board and share this critical information with families and donors who will find it enlightening. 【Ultra High Net Worth Philanthropy 2024】 With a total philanthropic cause of US$810bn in 2022, ultra-wealthy (net worth of 30m or more) are contributing US$190bn to make a difference in the lives of millions of people. In North America, ultra-wealthy donations totalled $91bn as a result of the increase in wealth and the long tradition of public giving in North America.
