History has many examples of bequests that have transformed the lives of individuals and communities, but very little is known about bequests. Further to my other post, having read the full paper, I can confidently say it's a must-read for our sector. Another great report by JBWere 's John Mcleod and Kim Venter. It provides invaluable insights that can transform our approach to bequest strategies. A clear call to action is for us to look at our bequest strategies in light of this report. Discuss the findings with your board and share this critical information with families and donors who will find it enlightening. After 18 months of research we are very proud to launch ‘The Bequest Report: Reshaping Australia by passing on more than assets’ - https://lnkd.in/e8G5m5yf Why is this research on Bequests relevant now?  Because this period of wealth transition is a once in a generation opportunity to unlock significant pools of capital, which have accumulated in many Australian households, for social impact. Some key observations to whet your appetite: ·       We estimate total inheritances will be approximately $150 billion in 2024 ·       Only 1% of this amount will go to for-purpose organisations (compared to 4.4% in the USA and 3.7% in UK). ·       In Australia, bequests currently make up approx. 0.6% of total income for charities (compared to 1.8% in the US and a significant 4.5%in the UK) ·       Over the next 20 years, we estimate a massive $5.4 trillion will move across generations. The size of the prize is obvious: if we can lift of bequest percentage from 1% to 4-5%, then we can increase the flow of capital by tens of billions of dollars to help address some of the many pressing social and environmental needs. Our aspiration with this report is to provide high quality insight to help everyone across the social impact ecosystem to develop and implement more effective strategies. We look forward to working closely with our for-purpose and private clients to help them turn these insights into strategies that help them achieve their ambitions. The Nature Conservancy of Canada/Conservation de la nature Canada raised $3.5 million in legacy gifts with an online will campaign by teaming up with Willfora and Willful. This fresh approach made it easier and cheaper to create wills, leading to a big boost in charitable donations. Other charities like Children Believe and Covenant House Vancouver also found success with similar efforts, securing millions in potential gifts. This shows the great ROI and value of educating donors about legacy giving. Australians are wonderfully generous 💞, and the not-for-profit sector benefits from it. According to McCridle's data of 2024, four in five Australians, or 84%, have given financially to charities or not-for-profits. It shows that there are over 59,000 registered charities that employ 1.42 million people and have an estimated 3.2 million volunteers in Australia. 75% of Australians give annually, and 24% give monthly. The interesting shift is from regular giving to spontaneous need-driven giving. This can be influenced by the fact that older generations prefer established charities while Gen Z favours start-up disrupters. Gen Y is the most neutral on giving to a start-up (44%) or an established charity (56%).
