First off, the structure has two phases, a shell phase, the part of the building that is a Dome, and then the tension phase, the part that comes inward to form a waterfall. The shell has a perimeter support that goes all the way along the edge of the building at level 5. Then you have 14 sets of columns that are inset from that perimeter. The area from the perimeter to the columns is supported in the same way that a Dome would be, but from the columns to the waterfall, there's nothing. This part of the structure is held up by tension. It's called a tension cone, and it's being supported by a compression ring that's created by the 14 columns. Who wants the models and the engineering was all worked out. It was of course then very important to choose the right materials to make the Dome and the tension cone. High strength steel and tempered glass were chosen for their durability and resistance to environmental stress. The steel could bear significant loads, while the glass panels were designed to withstand wind forces and other external pressures. This special laminated glass was used for the roof to prevent shattering even an extreme weather. It was within the framework of these glass panels that pipes were hidden to carry water up to the Oculus. Water would then pour out into the vortex and into the basement five stories under the airport. You see, if the water stopped on the main floor of the jewel, it was splashed up and flood The area instead waterfalls down into the basement and is then pumped around the building and back up to the roof.

Marking the start of construction works, the cornerstone has been laid at the site of the new Ülemiste Passenger Terminal in #Tallinn.  A multi-modal transport hub for the city’s commuters as well as international rail passengers and air travellers using the adjacent Tallinn Airport, the Ülemiste Passenger Terminal is designed as a connecting bridge linking together districts of Tallinn currently separated by the railway tracks that disect the city. Opening in 2028, Tallinn’s Ülemiste terminal will be the northern terminus of the new 870-kilometre Rail Baltica electrified railway now under-construction. Providing passenger services at speeds up to 249km/h, Rail Baltica will connect Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania with the European high-speed rail network in Poland.  #ZahaHadidArchitects developed the design with leading Estonian architecture & engineering firm Esplan. Circulation routes through the terminal have determined the station’s spatial geometry to aid navigation and the seamless integration of the city’s bus, tram, rail and cycle networks that intersect at the terminus.  Incorporating a modular structural system built in phases to enable ongoing operations on the rail lines throughout construction, the terminal has been designed and planned to BREEAM benchmarks and guidelines.  #Estonia’s Climate Minister, Kristen Michal, said: “We have been dreaming of a fast connection to Europe. This is a landmark year in the construction of Rail Baltica – in addition to laying the cornerstone of the Ülemiste terminal, the construction of the main line has also begun. Genuine Inquiry for NYC Engineers: I'm curious about the technical differences in engineering approaches between New York City and China. Specifically, I noticed that the engineers in China successfully used a RTBM (Roadheader Tunnel Boring Machine) on the Choi Hung tunnel. However, why is it that engineers in New York City seem to face challenges with employing similar technology to build the replacement two-track tunnel beneath the Hudson River?
