Controversial topic... 🗣 Event budgets can be a tricky topic when selecting a venue. I’ve often asked clients for their budget, only to hear, “We’re not sure. We haven’t even thought about it.” Then, when I present a proposal, they immediately say, “This is over our budget!" Clients hesitate to share their budgets for many reasons: fear of overcharging, lack of trust, negotiation tactics, and even fear of judgment. Sometimes, early on, there might not be a set budget, making it tough to give an exact figure. Fair. But in most cases, sharing your budget actually works in your favor. When I take on a venue client, I do the work. What I don't do is "farm out" elements of the brief to other agencies because I am either too lazy or too stupid to do it myself. Having too many links in the chain creates the chance of information not being passed on to the act and it also creates an extra commission thereby inflating the cost to the client.If you are a venue manager, you have every right to ensure your consultant is handling the entire account. The practice of a venue agent booking larger shows into the auditoriums of their venue clients only to engage the services of other agencies to handle the smaller "lounge" areas of the club is widespread and in my view, this should not be happening. If you want to call yourself a venue consultant, you should handle the entire brief yourself. IT’S TIME FOR A CHANGE After being completely abandoned by Scottish Government in the December budget it is clear that the only people that the industry can rely on to move forward are the people in it. YOU supported by the trade bodies, brands, suppliers and us the trade press. This is a pivotal point for the industry and like a number of years ago when the industry had to adapt to the curfew, and smoking bans being put in place with the birth of hybrid venues and nightclubs evolving to entertainment venues hosting gigs and events now is the time for the industry to evolve to offer the customer AN EXPERIENCE they can’t ignore. Venues that are currently driving footfall are offering an experience Bucks Bar , Maggie’s Rock N Rodeo, Kong, Wunderbar, Radisson Red, ColdTown House, Duck & Waffle, Eden, St Luke’s & The Winged Ox the list goes on. Experience and value are how the industry move forward. We have experienced personally that this is not the attitude of some venues who continue to look only at themselves and not looking at how they can be truly collaborative and this simply can not be the case. We also need the brands and distribution to step up be more collaborative and engaging with more venues and not just the big ticket sites. This may sound like the monkey teaching the organ grinder in some’s opinion but if that’s what it takes to move the industry forward then so be it. Open question to planners/promoters: Is it really necessary for an event to expand when successful? Or is it better to retain the exclusivity of a smaller event (context below) Another successful event last week, a couple of tickets shy of a sellout actually (fully tooting our horn here, the team put a lot of work into it) We were approached by a DJ afterwards singing her praises on the event, saying that we should expand into larger venues with a better headcount, increase ticket price to cover any overhead. Not sure how I feel about that, with the current set up everyone has a good time and gets paid, the venue are happy, and we're creating a space for a more dedicated following.
