The Trust Equation: Character x Competence : Learning from US Army Leadership Requirements Model. by Doug Meyer Source: https://lnkd.in/gMUTbijX The debate over whether Character or Competence is more important in defining Trust is akin to the age-old question of whether leaders are born or made. The simplistic answer is that both qualities are essential. Traditionally, the discussion is framed as a choice between character and competence. However, this may be the wrong approach. Instead of viewing them as competing alternatives, we should consider them as multiplicative factors in a trust equation: Character x Competence. As US Col. Kyle Marsh, the 7th Infantry Division Chief of Staff, suggests, competence and character together form a complete equation where each amplifies the other, rather than being separate, additive elements.

I’m sure we can all pick up a thing or two from #Astronauts, the #Navy Seals, #Taylor Swift, or #Olympic gold medalists. But most leaders don’t need to become #superstars. For most of us, getting the basics right will do just fine. What do you think those basics are? To me they are building a team where people feel trusted to make good decisions, and know they can share ideas and concerns. But what if you’re one of those who doesn’t settle for average? Nearly 15 years ago, as part of my Patriot Air & Missile Defense crew, we were gearing up for another deployment to Southwest Asia. While I don’t often discuss my decade-long service in the U.S. Army, it was during this time that I grasped the true essence of leadership. The transition from a non-commissioned and then warrant officer in the military to the tech industry has taught me one universal truth: taking care of your team is paramount. I've progressed from managing developers to supporting other managers, and now lead my own company. Perfection isn't required, nor is complete certainty in your actions—traits often absent in new leaders. However, ensuring the well-being of your team guarantees not just survival, but success.
