A Pattern of Concern:
“Life in the Garden of Captives”
“Monkey escapes at the AZA accredited Memphis Zoo, later captured”
Published October 11, 2024
The Memphis Zoo has confirmed that a monkey has been captured after escaping his crate.
According to the Memphis Zoo, a male colobus monkey named Rajesh “Raj” Koothrappali, has been safely detained after briefly escaping.
Memphis Zoo says that Raj the monkey was able to bend and escape from his crate during transport.
With assistance from the medical team, the staff were able to secure the perimeter, anesthetize the little escapee, and bring him back to his exhibit home.
This apparently isn’t Raj’s first escape — the Louisville Zoo confirmed that this monkey is the same Raj who escaped their zoo back in 2022.
When animals escape from their enclosures in zoos, the public is oftentimes misled into believing that such escapes are "uncommon" or not a "serious threat".
In news accounts, such incidents are oftentimes minimized, described as "rare" or state that the animal only escaped their enclosure "briefly".
The challenge in documenting animal escapes is primarily due to the fact that the AZA has no official policy in place that requires itself, or its accredited members to report such incidents to the public.
Rather, the public learns of such escapes via media sources or the laborious process of filling a "Freedom of Information Act" (FOIA) request with the government.
